@TheRunesmythe5 жыл бұрын
First off, both the base and the miniature came out looking quite awesome. I think you stayed faithful enough to the artwork while still adding personal touches and the diorama base definitely suits that thing (which is indeed creepy). Now, speaking as someone who's been doing this for a while, its not your skills that are falling short; white and light gray tones are *very* difficult to get completely smooth transitions on. In the case of the type of white acrylic paint we use for miniatures, that chalky, speckled finish comes from the fact that the pigment is still much coarser than other colors; the two sources for white pigment are lead (which they don't use for obvious reasons) and titanium oxide and this results in coarser pigment that makes it difficult to really adequately thin white paint and get a smooth coat. This carries over because many of light gray paints have white in them, meaning that some of that coarser pigment is present. One possible way to get around this is to buy something like artist's grade white acrylic paint; I don't know what's different about the source of pigment or the process of creating the paint but its much smoother and contains more finely ground pigments making it easier to thin and apply smoothly. Another option is to use white artist's acrylic ink; specifically I'd recommend the Daler Rowney FW inks if you can get them. You can still get a nice, opaque color with it and its pretty forgiving to use.

I really like that you don't make the things to look easy and share all problems that you've faced. A tip for blending and hightlighting: use sponge or fan brush, with the brush you are using it won't happen. The best results are on half-dry base color. The trick with sponge is to find the correct amount of top color. You can check my 'Skull Candle Holder' video to see how blending with sponge works.
@ShadowDrakken5 жыл бұрын
You can blend with a round brush just fine. Just have to feather and use thinned colors and layer it up from the blended area to the final color you want.
@DWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
@@ShadowDrakken on that small scale it's really hard to do so and I don't see the point to make your life harder when there are better and easier tools for this. Sponge for me works best for blending and hightlighting on volumetric objects, but I'll not use it on my flat paintings for example except when I'm painting moon, there it also makes miracles.

You are way too modest. This is gorgeous. And the removable base extension is a brilliant idea that I will be using. If you worry about a chalky look while highlighting, varnish after the base coat and thin your highlight colors with extra medium. It helps a bit with the highlight layers drying too quickly and not blending in the layers well. I probably shouldn't offer up paint tips to someone who already paints better than me. lol

I don't see why you aren't happy with your painting skills. Some of the channels I watch feature smaller items than this mini and using close-up photography can really highlight little imperfections, which are not visible at a normal viewing distance. This does not happen when I look closely at this mini. It stands-up to close scrutiny and looks fantastic. It quite probably looks even better from a more normal viewing distance. Bearing in mind that this is a fictional/mythical beastie, who's to say that your paint-job isn't absolutely perfect? It's YOUR interpretation of something and imho looks fantastic. One quick question: how would you define "dional"? As a complete novice at this stuff, I googled it and didn't find one single hit on the word. Thanks for sharing the process with us and Good Luck to Wicked Foundations with the kickstarter. All the Best, Dougie.

This video is brought to you by... Sculptamould! Those miniatures look awesome, gave me a kind of Pan's Labyrinth vibe as you were flicking through the book. I personally think your paintjob looks fantastic - I think that chalky look you got from highlighting makes larger miniatures look more realistic than the high contrast clean line highlighting that most miniature painters aim for. Diorama base is cool too - can imagine that placed harmlessly on the edge of a camp when players bed down for the night then... BOOM woken up by that thing staring down at them all :)

Quick and dirty, but very effective blending technique is to use feathering with diluted colors. You can set down a few very thin layers quickly, and deepen the color where you need it deeper by just adding layers that that area. And by feathering each layer you hide any sharp edges that might otherwise build up.

Here's a tip for making that transition from that grey (or whatever color) body to dark hands Apply a thin black wash up to the edge of where you want the transition. Let that dry and apply another thin black wash just slightly below the point you brought it before. Repeat until you get to a point you're happy, could even put straight black at the very ends now the transition is smooth if you want to really darken up the tips

To make a more 3D blood drip get some 1/4 lbs test monofilament fishing line and suspend it with either a weight at the end or make a small jig with a couple of tongue depressers and 1/4 - 1/2 inch round or squar wood strips 4 inches long or so and glue and screw them together so you have a squar with the top and bottom being flat. Take a pen vice and drill a few holes in both depressers to match. then run the fishing line from one depresser to the other and secure them tightly. Take your blood like paint and slowly add some to the top and let is drip some. Let dry a little then add some more. Letting it cure some between each application. This will give you not only texture on all sides but give you different thickness going down the stream instead of being flat on one side. Also works for waterfalls and fountains. You just need to make a few like this and then cut them off the jig place them side by side and use the water/blood paint to join them at the top. You can separate the strands and join a few here and there going left and right as well as going down the drips to male it look more real.

Also Maybe you're using to large of a brush for your minis? The one you used on this vid was almost comical lol. I don't know what you use for minis but I use a Windsor newton number 1 and 2 sable brush. They are a little expensive at 20 bucks CAD a pop but if you take care of them they last way longer than synthetic brushes and the way sable hold acrylic paint really upped my game. Also I've seen some of your other minis in your vids. Your pretty good IMO.
