Best instructional video I have seen so far about making your own solar filter using solar filter film sheets. Thanks!

Used this video for the 2024 eclipse and building a filter and worked like a charm. Thanks!

Thank you! This is by far the most helpful video i've seen on the subject. Huge help....even 6 years later. Hope to use my new filter for the 2024 event. Thanks again!

Exactly what was looking for! So many other’s over complicate by cutting round frames and round filters, but even as I watched those I kept wondering why do that, just cut it square and you’ll have more surface area for mounting, the only circle needed is the opening for the lens. Well done!

everyone is hiking up 20 stop filter prices, found out about the sheets that are miles cheaper. Thank you for making this video.

Note that some films' instructions tell you *NOT* to stretch the film. Please read the directions for the film you use.

Thanks. As soon as I get my scope, I'm going to make one of these. Simple, but elegant.

Should I make it to fit my lens or the lens hood? Is it better to be right on the lens?

Thanks for the tutorial, how important is it to get the filter completely taught? Do the wrinkles & creases in the film cause any distortions or loss of sharpness? Also, a tip from someone who makes architectural models, dont cut against the edge of that plastic ruler, over time you will shave it away and it will no longer be straight. Use a metal one instead.

I saw a comment on another DIY filter video that said minor wrinkles should be ok. I'd say try to avoid hard creases because the sharp corner MIGHT affect the image, but that's pure speculation on my part. The materials are cheap enough to make one and adjust after trial and error. Good luck, I'll be making one (or two) for myself this week.

Thank you so much for this video. I just completed one filter. It seems to work fine, but I have a question for you. Should the hole in the foam be large enough for the end of the lens to fit inside, against the film, or does the lens rest against the foam with the hole "centered" as best it can? Thanks again.
@AzulOxWorkshops7 жыл бұрын
I don't think it matters that much. Mine are small enough that the front edge of the lens (the filter ring) sits against the foam. That way there is less chance of damaging the film with the lens. The difference in distance between the front element shouldn't make any different.

Would I be able to substitute just cardboard for the foam core?

Yes. (Also, sorry for the slow reply... been on the road of the eclipse).

The experts say not to to look at the eclipse with your naked eye, even at the point of totality. Always use the filter- period! It looks like yuo could use a metric ruler for better precision and easier measurements- there are 25 divisions to an inch.
@lesliefranklin1870 Жыл бұрын
If the eclipse is total and not annular, the light during totality will be greatly reduced. Your camera will probably not be able to take photos through the filter during totality. That is why photographers build a filter to temporarily remove during totality only. After totality, the filter is reinstalled. If it's an annular eclipse, or you are not in the path of totality, you should leave the filter on your camera during the whole event.

I have a question.... If I use two ND 1000 filter one on top of the other one, it will be ok to photograph the eclipse?.....
