As a young lad, I witnessed the total eclipse in New York city. It was awesome as it was close to night time and the air temperature dropped dramatically. I plan to go south to view the August 21st solar eclipse. This time, I will have a camera to take good pictures. I have the advantage that the eclipse will occur about 2:00 pm. I plan to stay 200 miles away from the target zone and drive in the morning to the eclipse site. Just maybe I can use this strategy to choose an eclipse site just in front of clouds or just behind. This is just a thought as there will be much going on that morning. How important is light pollution to the images? If this is important, I will target a State park not close to civilization. Otherwise, I was planning an urban area such as Charleston SC.

Hi there, I am a beginner who has been wanting to get into photography for a while and am using the eclipse as the moment where I jump in(I am fortunate to live right on the total eclipse path in the midwest!). You mention that dynamic range is a very important aspect when considering a camera. I am looking at either the Nikon d3400 or d3300. All reviews I have watched have not really mentioned any appreciable difference between them with respect to picture quality, but would your point of newer cameras having better dynamic range apply here as the 3400 is the newer version? Furthermore, if not these two, is there some other camera you'd suggest near that price point($450-$500)? I will probably mostly be taking picture of nature and/or animals. Thanks for your time

@HudsonHenryPhoto11 ай бұрын
You may not love my answer. I would not pick much more than a 400 on full frame. The aura around the total eclipse is what makes it special. 400 was just perfect for that. I'd also suggest you need a 16 stop or solar filter out front, not a drop in on a long lens. You need to protect all that glass, the coatings, glue and resins. I'm sure NASA could spin one up for the 400 f4, but anything you slap together yourself will be lower quality than a stacked Kase 10 & 6 stop ND pair.

Question, as I'm new to this. I'm wondering, as the moon gradually crosses paths with the sun, would we have to continually make changes to our f-stop, exposure time, speed, etc? If not, what would be the best, somewhat decent settings for Mr. Amateur to set and leave alone? Best affordable sun filter? I only have one shot at this so I really don't want to hose it up. Can you shoot this with a regular ND Filter?
@DarkEnergyStudios7 жыл бұрын
Hi Hudson! Just found your channel and I really like it! I'm just up the road in Bellevue, Wa. and wonder if you know a solution to getting images into a PC faster. During totality in Oregon I'll only have about 2'08" or so and I can only get about 19 images in that time into the PC. They are bracketed at; 1/2000s, 1/1,000s, 0.5s, 0.25s, 1s, 2s, and 4s. I know that the on-board SD card would grab them virtually instantaneously, but the camera will be controlled with the laptop and the downloads into the drive take some time. During the partial phases I want to capture images every 10-15 seconds (1/4,000s exposures) or so to create a time-lapse of both partial phases with my Baader filters on. At the moment of totality (actually at the "Bailey's Beads phase"), the filters come off and the camera will start the bracketing. Filters back on after totality. Have you run into this before?
@DarkEnergyStudios7 жыл бұрын
Hi Hudson! The main imager is a Canon 600D with the main scope at 954mm FL (f7.5). I want RAW data and the files are 18MB. To get good bracketing during totality I'm planning on shooting 3 images each at 1/2,000s, 1/500s, 1/125s, 1/4s, 1/2s, 1s, 2s, & 4s. I'll only have 2'08" to get as many as I can. The 4s, 2s, & 1s shots alone will take up 21 seconds just for the exposures. Hudson, I think the crux of the matter though is the Astrophotography program BackYard EOS is a great tool for setting ahead of time, all the exposure durations, f ratios, ISO's, etc. It takes time to take the exposure, download to the camera and store it on the drive, then take the next and so on through the list. I am tethered with a USB cable from the Canon directly into the PC. I don't own Lightroom. Perhaps THAT is the issue. Thanks so much for thinking about it. Where will you be on the 21st?
@DarkEnergyStudios7 жыл бұрын
So I looked in the BYEOS program's settings area and there is an option to write the RAW images directly to the SD card instead of downloading them into the PC then opening the shutter for the next image. I'm testing a sequence run right now and it looks like my throughput should be substantially increased. You're a miracle worker Hudson! We're RV camping at the Farewell Bend Recreation Area over the hump on the Snake River near Ontario, Or. All the best, and Clear skies!
@nevadaxtube7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Hudson! I got some useful info from this video, however I expected two pieces of crucial information that were not clearly explained. Namely, the camera settings for the totality phase and the settings for the partial phases. I heard you say an aperture f8-f11 for the totality, but what about shutter speed? What about the partial phase settings?
@hudsonhenry91247 жыл бұрын
nevadaxtube I'd love to give you a setting that would work, but it will be very condition dependant. Cloud cover, haze, angle of the sun from your location: any of those variables and the changing eclipse will affect exposure. You'll need to use your meter. At totality, you won't need neutral density or glasses to protect your eyes and sensor. Then you can use your lens's optimum quality aperture settings (f8-11) or wider of it gets dark and you need more light. Also bracket in 2 stop intervals during totality to capture the Corona. During the partial, you will need neutral density and should stop down all the way (f22 or more) to try for some sun star captures as it's occluded. Again I can't tell you what shutter speed and iso as the light intensity will be changing and conditions can affect it.
@nevadaxtube7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply Hudson. It will be my first total eclipse (weather permitting) and I was hoping to get a starting point for shooting the totality. For instance, I shoot the full moon at f8 1/250 sec, but will change it as conditions warrant. I have no idea where to start to shoot the total phase on a clear day in Wyoming.
@hudsonhenry91247 жыл бұрын

Do you think using a ND16 filter on a drone would shadow our the eclipse too much? I'm not shooting the sun, but I'm going ot hover 400 feet and just film the the valley.
@hudsonhenry91247 жыл бұрын
Go pros and drones are designed to shoot all day into the sun without damaging them. The wider the angle of lens the less of a worry this is for bigger cameras too, and the drone and gopro cameras are very small. :-) You'd not be able to see anything but a tiny tiny dot with a 16 stop filter on there. ND16 is a four stop filter. The numbering is very confusing.
@AlexJenkins7 жыл бұрын
Sweet. Thank you. I think I may use my ND4 or just the UV filter then. I mostly want to get a short timelapse of totality covering the valley. I figure I have 20 minutes of flight time, that'll give me a short but fun little hyperlapse. Thanks for the advice. I'm definitely subbing!

Hello, I like to use that low-speed black & white analog film (the silver halide stuff, not the C-41 "monochrome"). Do you have any additional advice for using something like that? It's 100 speed. Will that be too slow?
@hudsonhenry91247 жыл бұрын
Hey Bruce, I haven't shot film in years and when I did, I was a color transparency guy primarily. I'd look for someone more familiar. I will say that I think 100 speed will limit you during totality. It will be low light. i'd want something 400 or better with a fast lens. Be sure you don't look through the viewfinder right at the sun during the partial phase without a very dark (16-stop) ND filter to protect your eyes.

You might want to reconsider using an ND filter. Both Nikon and Canon recommend against using anything other than a solar filter. Check out Baader or Thousand Oaks optical.

Thank you for the tip. I'll look into that!

I looked for the Hoya Solas and its advertized as an Infrared filter?

Good to know. I wasn't sure if it would affect the image in some strange way that I wasn't intending for, especially if I want to get some mountains in the foreground in color.

Excellent, thanks for the tip. I have a Sony A series and excited to try this being that I live soooo close to the center line of the eclipse! Fingers crossed for agreeable skies!

I live on the east coast and wondered if I could set up another camera placing the sun at the left of the frame... with out budging the camera would the sun still be in the frame at the end of the event? Diagram bottom of this page puppydogparkphotos.blogspot.com/2017/08/solar-eclipse.html

Any tips on shooting eclipse on film?
@davidrothschild89137 жыл бұрын
hey thanks for your thoughts. In general I've found film to have more dynamic range, excluding HDR techniques of course. I have the protective glasses and will likely just use a Polarizer. My goal is more to capture the whole light and atmosphere and not so much the Eclipse itself. My Nikon F3 has a waist level viewfinder so maybe I will use that to protect my eyes. I kind of want the eclipse to possibly burn the film just to see what happens.

Yeah I know what you mean about the shadows for sure.

How in Gods name are you supposed to get stars when you've got the sun 'corona' which would clearly overexpose the shot, even if bracketing? I've done several astro shoots and I typically use 14mm at 2.8, ISO 3200. This, I don't think, would work, right? I'm guessing shooting (my 24-105 L series Canon lens) at about 50mm, ISO 100 or 200, at F8 or F11...and just wildly modify the bracketing to account for a variety of shutter speeds and hope that one of the longer exposures catch stars to stitch in post? lol sorry for the novel. Advice greatly appreciated and thanks for the video!

Left out shutter speed. Astro shots 14mm, 2.8, ISO 3200, 30 sec

Great, thanks! Will definitely practice this. I'm guessing that my ISO will still have to be fairly high, and also use a slower shutter speed? 1600 ISO at 20 seconds and just play around with it? Thanks again.

You're absolutely right. Thanks again :)

The eclipse is happening where I live at 2:34pm. Will I be able to shoot it with the 14-24 when it's that high in the sky? Or should I just use my 300mm lens?

Solar filters aren't that expensive, I buy a sheet of solar film and make multiple filters myself using UV filters off eBay and tracing the glass to measure the size and putting the film in the filter.

Very old video now. In the wake of shooting that past total eclipse, I'll simply be taking my Kase magnetic kit to Mazatlan next spring and bracketing 5 frames three stops apart. The 10 and 6 stop filters stacked are plenty to track the partial eclipse and you pull them for totality. :)
