The ferrier rasp is my favorite. I have some very old ones that my grandpa had on the farm. Yesterday I started on a rasp chopper. It’s 14” long. Have a great day brother and watch your 6.

I really like the texture of your farrier blades and this one is amazing. I love the shape and think it will do anything you ask it to do, can't wait to see it completed.

Are you using a magnet to hold the blade to ge grinding plate? If so, where do I find one?
@theriversexperience9383
@theriversexperience9383 6 ай бұрын
I'm just using the magnet to hold the blade. It doesn't have enough power to reach the platen through the blade and belt.

I’ve made several knives from farriers rasps. Had some that were not so great either. That was before I would test each one. Many times I’ve found they will not harden in canola. Had to use water to get them to harden. Thanks for the video

Yup, you heat treat them just like 1095 so you need to heat soak them at 1475 for 10 minutes then quench in a fast quenching liquid like parks 50.

Finally added a Farrier's rasp to my shopping list...I've gotta make one of these. Another idea for drilling those holes on the farrier's rasp is to use centering drills, which actually have a point on the tip. I do think using the template as long as possible is a fantastic idea!

This without a doubt is one of my favorite video's you put out lately. Thank you sir! I do have one question. Why don't you use a "used/worn out farrier's rasp? I'm sure you can find plenty.

Lookin good so far, is there a reason you didn't lay out the pattern in the other direction on the rasp, as in the pattern handle to the edge opposite of the rasp tang to save more material on the rasp?
@theriversexperience9383
@theriversexperience9383 3 жыл бұрын
The only real reason why I did this way is because I like seeing the file texture all the way through to the end on the tang. You make a valid point when it come to overall material saving though.

When you put the file in the forge the first time to get the temper out how long do you do it for and how do know it ready to work?

how long did you heat it for when you annealed it? did you slow cool it also ? Process ?? thanks. I have the exact same file so I am very intersted. I am prob going to do a large Bowie with mine.

When annealing the rasps I heat them to non-magnetic then close off the forge for 30 minutes and then open the forge for 30 minutes then sit it outside to cool the rest of the way. It's almost the same process that I use when I normalize my steel on the 1st round of my 3 part normalization cycle.

@@theriversexperience9383 I'm just starting to make my first knife and I also got some old farrier rasps. I tried to grind them flat without annealing and it takes hours. So I ordered the material for a mini forge and a burner. So when you close off the forge for 30 min, is the burner than still on fire? Or is it heat to non-magnetic, turn the burner out, close the forge for 30 min, open forge and wait 30 min and than let it cool in room temperature? Could you please explain the quenching in one of the following videos in detail? I'm really interested on the further process. Greetings from Germany!
@theriversexperience9383
@theriversexperience9383 3 жыл бұрын
You need to get the steel to non-magnetic then turn the burner off and shut the forge for 30 minutes, then open it and then let cool to room temp. I will be going over the quenching process in Sunday's video.

If there are any questions that I don't answer, make sure and check out some of the knife making forums. They go into tons of detail on how to heat treat farriers rasps, that's where I go when I'm trying to figure out what to do.
