I feel so disappointed that I didn't find this video until just now. I must have blown through 12 different types of expensive drill bits trying to drill through a non-annealed file and eventually just gave up and epoxied the scales on without using pins like I had originally hoped. My next try will be so much better after watching this video.

Ive often wondered if hardened steel moves any different on a grinder, I bet they grind about the same but hardened kills belts faster

I do use files from time to time to make knives. I do not anneal them but I do temper them in the oven twice at 400 deg F, for two hrs each time. While they are not "soft" as annealed files they are workable. I do use a torch to soften the handles for drilling. Wrap a wet rag around recasso in a vice and heat the tang. Optionally put blade in a bucket of wet sand an heat handle. Still tough to drill, but doable. I know other knife makers that do this. Love all your videos and great instruction!

If you use multi purpose drill bits that have what looks like a masonry bit on the end it will cut through a file like butter!!!! That's what I use. 👍

Jesus dude. What did you do to your hand? I have some scars am my hands from doing metal work too, but your look like they have a serious story behind them. Love the videos. You have really got me into wanting to start making knives myself. Thanks for all the info, and not just a video stat shows some of the work. You actually explain what you’re doing and why.

I find that yes it does shape the same way, however i find the belts wear out faster. So pick the area you want to spend money. Belts or time and forge fuel

Wondering if you could talk about case harden rasps. I am told that it is common in ferrier rasps. I believe you can heat them past non magnetic and quench them. Is oil or water better? Thanks again for helping.

Very informative video. Just an FYI, but I bought a 1/8 carbide drill bit for drilling in harder steel before, they work wonderful, but there very easily chipped or broken, and they aren't cheap. I just wanted to throw that out there if anyone wants to make a knife out of a file, but doesn't have a forge. Anyway the storm has passed here, and the tornado watch has expired. Stay safe, and good luck with the weather.

As you seem to be helpful to us. About drilling into heat treated steel. I been using 1.5 inch bandsaw blades to make my knives and to drill the holes without annealing the hard steel of new bandsaw blade steel. Just use your cut off grinder and as you grinding watch for the steel to get orange heat and turn blue then it's ready to go drill your hole quickly and ready to pin into. 📌 You can thank me later Buddy 😊

ok u confuse me, unless anneal and heat treat are 2 different things, hey im new at this, but u said u don't anneal the whole entire file then u said u don't have to RE heat treat? how can ya re heat treat if u haven't annealed em or heat treated em? just a slip of words I guess?
@theriversexperience9383
@theriversexperience9383 3 жыл бұрын
Nope, not a slip of words. Heat treating and annealing are 2 different steps. Annealing takes the hardness out of the steel that was created by the heat treating process. I typically cut the amount of steel that will be used from a file and only anneal that portion of the steel. I anneal the file steel to be able to drill holes in it for the handle pins. Once the file has been annealed to make it softer, it will then need to be re-hardened by the a heat treating process. Anneal= make soft Heat treat= make hard

I burnt up drill bits when I started on blank I bought off Ebay from England.. Was HRC 61 and after I learned the best at hardware store are NOT Machinist grade...(even if said for metal,NOT HARDENED STEEL) I went on Ebay and bought 1 expensive bit just for hardened steel called "Jobber HSS" and I was able to drill right through with oil where I wasted so much money at hardware store trying..lol..Now I treat those bits like gold and keep them away from regular ones... I call them SUPERMAN'S BITS..(true story)....If your not able to anneal,go on ebay for HSS JOBBER bit..Then you only need toaster oven for one hour at 400 to back off the hardeness of file because files are much to hard for knife use...So frustrating when I did not know ,frying best at hardware store in seconds.lol,..$$$$$

@@theriversexperience9383 I went and looked,hard to find them through so many. "metalcuttingtool" is the shop on Ebay,and one of the listings number is 141532909747....These have their own case are so special..clear with red rubber cap or yellow plastic case...All steel cutters are not equal..This guy has best on line.I bought sizes I use most and treat them like gold...I do not know if he makes them,or is just a dealer but they cut through hardened steel like wood after I wasted $30 bucks on best hardware store could muster and did not even touch the material.. metalcuttingtool in small case letters...He is modest of them but amazing ..I just grabbed a listing number to locate his shop,look at his for hardened steel with red rubber cap in clear tube..Jobber Hss for hardened steel..
