• Dad's Journey to Journ...
Hey guys, Dad here. I'm working on crafting my third ABS (American Bladesmith Society) presentation knife, and it's designed to be a fighter-style blade. I'm using 5160 steel, which is like the spring steel found in cars, and it's certified quality steel with a clean pedigree, so there's a minimal chance of imperfections. The rules require using single carbon steel, so I'm avoiding Damascus patterns.
I'm really focused on getting the blade just right, grinding it carefully for a smooth transition to the tip, and creating a precise edge. I'm using a 120-grit slack belt for a nice convex shape and following a scribe line to ensure a clean blade edge. The guard fitting process is meticulous, involving a lot of handwork to achieve a perfect fit.
I'm using different materials like stainless steel and a custom copper alloy for the guard, spacer, and handle. The whole handle attachment process involves shaping, filing, engraving, and making sure everything fits together flawlessly. Heat treatment is crucial for durability, and I'm showing all the steps to achieve that toughness.
Ultimately, you'll see the completed knife, highlighting its visual appeal and practicality. Throughout the video, I'm emphasizing the importance of precision, attention to detail, and the satisfaction that comes from crafting something with your own hands.

This is so insanely impressive to me as a huge fan of knives but also a huge idiot when it comes to making things like this. I consier myself super resourceful and clever when it comes to fixing and building things but machine work like this just blows my mind. Some day I will absolutely CARVE out some time to devote to learning some of these incredible skills.

That's an excellent little fighter! I have to say, I'm kind of surprised you and your son don't have your MS stamps yet given the incredible knives you make. Did the ABS implement new hoops to jump through to qualify? I haven't looked at the requirements in over a decade now, so I have no idea anymore.

So, I have a question. If you are already making/selling great quality knives, what is the benefit to getting your journeyman/master smith title? I understand that with it, you become accredited, no second guessing if you're a real blade smith, and in the end you can probably charge more for your blades. I thought that you were already at that point. (Not dogging the ABS)

This means you get family-related content, and we are thrilled to have you join our family on these exciting adventures. Before you know it, you might even see videos of Mom making knives. 😉 ~Josh Royer/Kyle's brother/Dad's son/Mom’s son/videographer. P.S. If Dad were not posting here, you WOULD NOT get to see Kyle more. Instead of receiving one video a week featuring both Dad and Kyle mixed, you would only get one video a month showcasing Kyle (because he takes his time crafting knives due to his exceptional skills). I understand your desire to watch Kyle's impressive knife-making talent, but I am incredibly proud of my Dad, as is Kyle and Mom. Therefore, we will continue to feature his work on this channel to demonstrate his progress as a Dad who is learning from his son, Kyle. 🔪👨‍👦‍👦🎥
