It absolutely is not cheating. What's the difference between programming a stop point and using a kiss block? Both of them make the press stop at a desired thinkness. It is still the skill of the smith that decides the end results and your end results are amazing. Thanks for taking us along 👍 and Hello from just down the road, Tucson, Az.

Twist Damascus patterns are underrated. I’m glad more smiths are doing new patterns and playing with them more. Layer count alone (7 layer Ws with 25 layers across) makes the pattern more elaborate. Great work on this one.

Really impressed by how humble this guy is. It takes a lot of self knowledge and humility for a guy that is as talented as he is to state that he couldn't say he had his own definable style yet. Also like how he credits his inspirations, like when he mentions about how much he as been inspired by Mareko's handles

That's actually fair... hmm...
@aaronmarkstaller
@aaronmarkstaller 7 ай бұрын
The difference is was it by hand with kiss blocks, still on the line, or by robot or technology assisted. Wheres the line then. Buying a linear servo to hold the blank and push it in for you as well is just the same as him holding it. Buying a robot to hold and move and press the whole thing is the same as him doing it. Then whats different with his fancy “hand made” knives for $3000 and a $15 temu damascus knife. Thats the line. Robot assisted, or not.
@tryxxor
@tryxxor 7 ай бұрын
@@aaronmarkstaller i would say putting a kiss block in the press or pressing a button isnt that much of a difference. but in the same line we could argue about the press itself, the belt grinder, the gas forge, angle grinder or any other machine. any idiot can put a sheet of steel in the laser/waterjet cutter and the automatic grindingmachine but i doubt most people could make a acceptable knife with the tools we see in the video.

I'm not into blacksmithing by any means, but watching you create reminds me very much of how wands are crafted in Harry Potter. Each creation is unique to the next from the way the actual bulk of the piece is created to the very handle that goes along with it, all pieces work harmoniously with one another that it ends up creating something beautiful, unique, and individual to its user.

You can try clamping your handle to your knife the way Jason Knight does it: Get a piece of leather, or soft jaws for your vise, fix the blade in the vise between the leather/soft jaws so that the tang sticks out, then fit up your handle, and use long quick-grip clamps by clamping the end of the handle to the opposite side of the vise jaw. Can use a couple clamps for it, too. Should be a bit more reliable that clamping one clamp to another, cause the clamps could shift and you could lose pressure.

Not wanting to be smart but considering dust collection any cheap vacuüm cleaner would be better than nothing. You can easily make a stand for it so you can position it to your liking. I tile many bathrooms and sometimes I can't cut the tiles outside. So I made adapter for an air duct extension, so I can attach my Starmix vacuüm to it. This way I can cut, grind and drill the tiles on the spot. Works like a charm.

Seen this knife maker make jig for twisting. It consists of an I-beam. 1 end side is station with (square die jig) that holds the bar to be twisted. This side is spun by hand crank. It does have bearings. The beam side has same kind of die. It's stationary, but the frame it sits on rolls along the I-beam like an overhead crane. But he twisted these bars easily. I did not know his gear ratio for twisting? Just throwing this out there for you. HARPIE KNIVES is the guy.

I am a luthier (guitar builder), and I have used quite a bit of Ebony. It is hard to tell by the color in the video, but it it has brown striping in the wood, it would most likely be Macassar Ebony. If it has greyish striping, it would be Gaboon Ebony. Brazilian Ebony and Madagascar Ebony are very black and dense, and often rapidly dull tools. Your wood does not look solid black enough to be those rare woods.

Jesse, You need to drill an air hole in the handle for excess epoxy to squeeze out through. Without the air hole, you’re pushing too much of the glue out of the top. You’re leaving a lot to chance using your current method. Remember your glue will soak into the handle material as well, leaving less for adhesion to the tang. You should also be using a final securing pin. Glue is not enough even if you use the pilot hole. You’re knives are awesome, and your talent is impressive. Small corrections have huge long-term impacts Cheers
