Ok I have always wanted to hand forge my own knives but a damascus pattern I have always wanted to see is a counter twist with a ladder pattern added in to the twist but I don't know how it would be done I call it a twisted ladder Damascus

As A Saxon , may I just say that the term “Viking seax” is ridiculous! It’s an Anglo Saxon Seax. We made ‘em and were NAMED AFTER THEM.

I collect Seaxes, usually of monosteel, and pattern welded ones, but I have never seen a Damascus steel one like that, it’s beautiful. But that style of Seax, is the Anglo Saxon Broken back Seax. Also the handles on most Seax were over long, in fact some of the handles on smaller Seax, were longer than the blade, so a six or seven inch long handle would be accurate for this Seax.
@jhublades

Thanks for the info! I knew it was in the style of the broken back seax but I didn't know the handle length was supposed to be much longer. I will keep that in mind for future seaxes.

For the nerd neck comment, I had REALLY bad nerd neck from years of gaming, its been about 6 months since I started going to the gym and working out, I used to have 2 days of back days a week very spaced out but i've noticed 1 a week is better for recovery as long as your back workout is very intense, trust me, I *promise* you, if you wanna fix your nerd neck working out your back completely fixes it, ive seen a HUGE improvement in mine already. I started out at home with dumbells and a bench but cables offer alot at the gym, maybe you could afford your own cables for home if you dont like the gym, either way, it wont solve itsself on its own over time, it will only get worse, beautiful build by the way, just thought i'd offer some advice, if you need any more I'd be happy to help. Thanks for the half an hour of entertainment homie.

It's not Damascus it's layered forge welded.
@stevealford230
@stevealford230 Жыл бұрын
@@BennyCFD For at least 200 years, the term "Damascus" has been applied to high layer count pattern-welded steel that roughly emulates the look of traditional high Vanadium content "Wootz" crucible steel from Damascus (and India) that gets its "watered" random pattern from the carbon nucleation sites created by the Vanadium. I believe it was a German knife merchant who first recorded the distinction in the 1800s, listing blades of both methods as two separate types of Damascus... so it's not the ignorant misconception that you think it is: it's been standard nomenclature to refer to pattern-welded steel as Damascus for centuries. And it's specifically because it was done, in conjunction with etching the finished blade, to try to replicate the look of traditional crucible Wootz Damascus steel, which was a misnomer in itself because a great percentage of that "watered" crucible steel was made in India, not Syria. So if you want to be pedantic and say that pattern-welded steel isn't Damascus... then most of what you'd call "real Damascus" isn't actually Damascus, either... but is instead Indian Wootz. Or you could just go along with what has been the global standard terminology in the worldwide blade market for centuries, and refer to this type as "Pattern-welded Damascus" and the original type as "Crucible Damascus."

I live in AZ too. I do construction and can say" you don't sweat ,,, much". I would be soaked like I just jumped into a pool with all my clothes on. Nice job on the Viking Seax. Will sub to see what's next . Stay Hydrated and yeah..... Drywall should not get that hot .... but, it is made from a flame/heat resistant material. In the garages , they use a thicker 5/8ths drywall for greater fire resistance . But I wouldn't press your luck as it is meant only to buy you some time to escape the inside of the house if a fire breaks out in the garage. I guess they figure there is a higher chance of fire in the garage due to the vehicles and possible chemicals storage. Keep in mind that the heat transfer to the framing above you could melt any wires you might have laying across the framing causing electrical hazzards ..... and although not very common, it could also spontaneously combust in the attic and you may not catch it till its out of control. May i suggest you roll the forge out the side door until you can get a proper hood to draw the heat outside. Keep up the great work. Stay safe!

Thumbs up for including so many of the intermediary steps of the process as well as your consideration for doing what you did. There is a lot to learn from what you have put up here and the included screw ups were hillarious. - Keep up the good work.

If you died TODAY, where would you be spending eternity? Have all your sins been forgiven or are you still hoping that you're a good enough person to earn a spot in heaven. The reality is that no one can earn a spot, our sin disqualifies us. But the God news is that Jesus paid for our qualification by dying on our behalf taking the punishment that we deserved. JESUS said, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son; that WHOEVER believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." - John 3:16 Nothing is more important than your eternal destination. Please, don't say, "When I get older I'll get right with God' or 'I'll get serious with Jesus one day when I'm ready.' Don't wait any longer, today is the day of salvation. Get right with God today, for tomorrow very well might be too late. We invite you to REPENT and accept that Jesus Christ is Lord of your life by praying this simple prayer out loud right now... 'Heavenly Father, I turn away from my old life and repent for my sins. I believe that Jesus came for me, that Jesus died for me and that Jesus rose again for me so that I can be forgiven and receive eternal life. I believe in my heart and confess with my mouth that Jesus Christ is the Lord of my life from this day. Through Him and in His Name, receive the gift of eternal life. I ask you to fill me with the Holy Spirit and lead me for the rest of my life. In Jesus name - Amen. 🎉🎉🎉

Great build :) To answer your questions, I'd say that power tools are for rough shaping (disc cutter, course grinding) and final finish (polishing). Filing would be great for precision work followed by hand sanding, and you'd still need to buff it up with a power tool, but hand tools do introduce less heat in the process. This will differ slightly between wood and metal, but the basic gist is to use power tools in such a way that you only need a minimum of final shaping, with in your case also keeping heat treating in mind. It's an order of steps kind of deal, and whatever helps you minimise the steps at the best quality you can deliver brings more food on the table.

At 3:40 Would putting just a basic box fan, angled slightly toward the ceiling above the forge, fix the potential heat buildup? It would not only cool down the ceiling, but should also, in theory, blow the hot air away from that specific spot. You could even put the fan on that shelf where that white box is. If you want to get even "fancier", hang an aluminum tray that rests about a foot away from the ceiling above the area that is getting hot, and then point the fan at that.

At 22:50 So, there are reciprocating saws. And then there are a few reciprocating files, though only air/pneumatic files. And then there is an adapter for reciprocating saws to attach a file "head"/"bit". And if you can't find the tool/adapter you are looking for, you could always build your own tool/adapter for a reciprocating saw. I also didn't look too hard, so there may be actual electric reciprocating files. And then there are attachments for a drill that turns it into a reciprocating saw, but I couldn't find one for a file. But maybe you could modify the saw attachment to fit/take files? And if all else fails, you could always make an attachment for a regular drill that might do the job. Think of how a piston in a car works, or look up rotary motion into linear motion. Though I don't know how much pressure you'd be able to apply to the tool, and without using some gears and getting (more) complicated, you'd have to hold to hold the drill sideways. Thinking on it, making an attachment for an orbital sander (same concept as for the drill) might be easier/better, but I don't know if you can vary the speed of an orbital sander like you can with a drill.

I have to admit, I was about to watch a different KZbin video and off to the right, I saw "Making a $3,000 Damascus Viking Short-sword." I immediately switched over and watched your video instead! I'm glad I did. I had not heard of you and that you have won multiple Forged in Fire Championships. What's more, you're in my neck of the woods. I used to live in the Town of Gilbert, but a year ago, moved to The City of Chandler. FYI, I contacted Iron Rhino Forge, last week, to enroll in their upcoming blacksmithing class in September. I'm glad I found your channel. I definitely will be following you. Hopefully, you might help answer some questions along the way !!! 🙂
