Well, it bother me about this story since I was unfamiliar so I listened to the story here on KZbin and found the original ending was just as baffling as yours. It took an innocent child to point towards the truth while the adults went along with the lie to stay in position and/or stay alive. Sounds too familiar with today’s blatant conditions. We shall suffer for hundreds of years due to turning a blind eye. Such a great book for you to tackle, Mrs. Jules. Thanks.
