Longtime user here. Some useful tips on how to work with this. I mainly use it for customizing Breyer and artist resincast modelhorses. - When using gloves: Find a pair that fits like literally like a glove. I see sooo many people with gloves twice the size they really need. Seriously, tight nitrile gloves are the best! Measure across your knuckles and match that measurement to the size. Try several sizes because sometimes comapnies have their own ideas. - Also: Do not mix more than you need. It goes off semi-fast and is a liiiitttle sticky first. Use a few drops of water to make it smoother. - When done, place a small piece of plastic bag in each tub, (like 2 x 2 ") on top of the clay and a cube of kitchen sponge that is slightly moist. Moisture will ensure your Apoxie stays pliable and smooth to use. - When you are a beginner, start with the SMALL tubs and in "Natural " version. The coloured ones actually sortof acts differently. The brown version is... WEIRD. ;-D - It can be smoothed down using various old brushes and similar tools. - Wipe EVERYTHING you have used when done, don't let it go down the drain and clog the pipes. it hardens via chemical reaction, so if a decent piece gets lodged in the drains, it'll settle there. ;-D (Disclaimer: I am a user, not an expert. )

Yeeeh. Wouldn't make a habit of that. The vapors can be no bueno for your lung tissues and it won't show up until multiple exposures. It took THREE MONTHS of use before the toxic effect was noticeable and by then it was too late. Small chance to occur, but I'm living proof that it can and does and when it does, it lasts for weeks. And trust me when I tell you you do not want this shit messing with your lungs in a post Covid world. It's been a f'ing nightmare and when it's flaring up, (Have been hospitalized on numerous occasions unable to breathe) and it turns my hands into something that vaguely resembles a deleted scene from a SAW movie. BE SAFE. Were a vapor rated mask when working with two part epoxies and resins. It's worth the precaution. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH how slowly this reaction can take place. I used Apoxie Sculpt several times a week for MONTHS before it ever became an issue, but thats different for everybody and once it's there, it's there for life. It took me additional time to even understand what was happening, because I had no reason to suspect the resin I had been using without issue for months, leading me to further accidental exposure. Definitely not trying to scare people away from it, however. It's an incredibly rewarding medium but respect it and handle it as safely as possible. Remember that a lot of the FINER details can be sanded and carved out AFTER its safely cured as well.

Ace of Clay: "Wow I hate this clay I never really want to use it a bunch in the future, it's garbage." *proceeds to do some research on it rather than diving straight into it and letting the material overwhelm him* Also Ace of Clay: "Y'know, I really love this, it's sooooo smooth, very nice. It's so satisfying - I can't wait to use it again in the future." It's always tough when you step out of your comfort zone and try new materials and methods, but I'd say this time around you did great! I'd love to see a full development of this dragon, but bigger builds like that can be overwhelming. Just take it one step at a time, even one piece at a time, and you'll gradually get there.

@vaevictusdeus 3 жыл бұрын
Won't be tomorrow. Will be months down the road, unfortunately. And it will look like horrifically dry and rashy skin covered in small/large cuts and lesions that crack and open every time you flex your fingers. The resin causes almost a moisture resistant barrier on the surface of your skin as well, so lotions/vasoline/etc... are almost completely ineffective. And thats ANY area of your skin thats exposed to even the vapors, because at that point, the toxic reaction has already triggered. Won't be easily washed off either and can effect anywhere else on your body that you touch with the affected area (my left eyelid practically fused shut for a week on light vapor exposure and yeah, it was covered in cuts as well).

@mellvee
@mellvee 2 жыл бұрын
I used to have that problem with paper clay, as well, so years ago I made the switch to polymer. I finally figured out that the reason my air dry clay kept cracking was because my structures were usually glass or metal, which leaves the clay unable to dry evenly, or that my sculptures we're thicker than an inch and a half. Air dry clay has to be allowed to dry evenly, so if you use wood or simple armitures for your base, and don't make any part of your sculpture thicker than an inch and a half, that will solve that problem. At least it did for me. I still vastly prefer polymer clay for most things, but there are just some things air dry clay is better for. Hope that helps!

Yeah to DeeJayBe Studios! Thank you for plugging her AoC. She does beautiful work. I've been watching your vids to get back into sculpting, horse models, and art in general. Both of you have been super awesomely helpful. This vid is super great because it shows the art struggles. Definitely a big thank you for sharing experimenting with art. It's super important to see the thought process to other artists! (... and it's brave❤)

Most of what I do is various life-sized ghouls and goblins for haunted houses, and Apoxie Sculpt is great for chonking in large structural details on extant bases... like say you had a big ol' plastic skull and you wanted to add horns or whatever prior to the skinning process. It's great because it's, like, halfway between a sculpting medium and glue and just gives you a really durable frame without needing to be baked (lots of times, your armatures for haunt projects are foam or plastic). Finer components like teeth are best done in polymer clay then glued in later. OH! And epoxy putties are great for making custom gears and components for animatronics too! But yeah... just a totally different beast with (for me anyway) totally different applications from polymer clay. I'm pretty amazed you managed to produce an entire sculpture with fine detailing out of it, but hey... fantastic job!

I use Apoxie Sculpt in my projects for my shop. After three sessions, I left the gloves behind. It's a little sticky to begin with, but I do not have any reactions or complications by using my hands. I'll merely smell like roasted pumpkin seeds for a while. I think you're actually allergic to it!

I love ceramic clay! It was the first thing I used when I started sculpting as a freshman in hs. The only reason I recently made the switch to polymer clay is because of covid I don't have easy access to a kiln with everything being closed :/ Edit: My pfp is a Jason mask key chain I made with cosclay :)

I appreciate your willingness to show your entire process of learning how to work with the material. I think sometimes people look at artist and think oh he's so good I could never do that when in actuality I feel there's a lot of experimenting and learning that people don't always get to see.
