Michaels carries an inexpensive "gold leaf" that is of course completely not made of real gold, but it sticks very well to raw polymer clay and can be baked. I use it on beads and fairy doors. The fan turned out beautifulI; I love the addition of the sequins (totally agree that flat sequins look classier for some reason).

I make so many comments durning the early morning hours, I bet you think I’m a insomniac! You’d be right about that. It’s amazing the things I have watched and the things I have learned during the night. These fans are so pretty! I really wish we had fancy things to enjoy in today’s dressing customs. I can’t imagine future generations trying to imitate our current dress code of flannel pajama bottoms and sweat shirts. We do dress up sometimes by substituting yoga pants or jeans instead of the standard PJ bottoms, when we go out somewhere fancy, like Walmart or Burger King. I loved your project. I’m beginning to think there is no end to your talents for design and construction. I bet you could design furniture for your eras of interest. It wouldn’t surprise me to tune in and see a classic mid century dressing table, or bed ensemble, designed on your pattern paper, and spread out on the Blue Table Of Doom!

Gold leaf works really well with polymer. Mica powders (or eyeshadows) are great on polymer too, esp for insects because you can get lovely iridescent colours. They can be dusted onto raw clay using a paintbrush. Or even onto baked clay. The only thing is that the pieces need sealing to avoid the powder wearing off. Works particularly well on black clay as iridescent colours usually do. Hey, and ID watch you tambour a whole dress....tambours pretty fast really, but who cares lol

It turned out really beautiful! I kind of want to make a fan now. You should definitely do a video on tambour embroidery! I've been teaching myself and there aren't many good videos on it. Using a proper frame for tambour makes it way easier than using a hoop because you can get more tension. I've got an elbesse star tapestry frame which is pretty good except that I had to drill extra holes in it. They come in loads of different sizes and are pretty cheap. I would like to make a big slate frame at some point though. I'd love to see what kind of design you'd come up with for a beaded dress

Okay wait WHAT - how did you stitch sequins with the fan staves in the way?? Also I love Tambour beading, I have a really small loom and I originally learned so I could bead burlesque pasties faster but haven't actually done it yet haha
@TheClosetHistorian3 жыл бұрын
Okay...you caught me skipping trying to explain this 😅 Mostly I just took a longer stitch over the the fan stave with 2 sequins threaded on to bridge the gap, and the wove the tread back through over and under the sequins so that it looked stitched down like the rest. Sometimes when an area is extra annoying I will just peel the fabric off the stave a bit so I can properly stitch them also!
@AliciaSmith19833 жыл бұрын
Captain obvious question. Shouldn't you use fabric medium with the acrylic paint to make sure it doesn't crack???? I don't know just a thought.
@foxpaws6103 жыл бұрын
I've found that acrylic craft paint is thin enough to skip the fabric medium especially since this was a woven fabric and not a garment which flexes and stretches while wearing. I would suggest using a decent quality acrylic tube paint to use for a project like this. The tube paint generally has more pigment in it, can be thinned to a similiar consistency as the craft paint and should cover better in less layers.
@TheClosetHistorian3 жыл бұрын
Indeed I have a few of these I have made years and years ago in this same way and have had no cracking or damage so far, so I think because the paint doesn't have to flex or stretch much that it handles itself pretty well on these.
@annastevens15262 жыл бұрын
Didn't know you could buy fan blanks & decorate your own, that's awesome! The final product was definitely a great match to your gorgeous Cicada gown ensembles. Agree with you re. how beautiful Japanese lacquer art is... and you're right (29:50) that Victotian porcelain painting as a job was less fun than it sounds! The main problem being the lead-based paints, combined with the way the fact that the artists linked their brushes to create a fine point to the hairs... 😵 (Mercedes Lackey does an interesting job incorporating these health risks, as well as the sexual predation that occurred upon all-female factory staff, into her fantasy novel 'The Gates of Sleep'?) I have to register a dissenting opinion re the relative tackiness of faceted re flat sequins though! 😆 (The more jewel-like ones just seem more classy to me somehow...? Not to mention more sparkly! 😂)
