In this video, Chuck shows how to make a belt using reptile print leather with a veg-tanned liner. The belt's tapered ends feature a buckle, loop, and tip set, and it is hand-stitched using Ritza Tiger Thread.

Great ideas on using an English point punch for the tapers and getting the tip to fit well.

Love this video Chuck. One of your best. Talk about teaching an old dog new tricks. I like the idea of using the English point strap end punch to cut the tapers. I also like your "shorty" belt end templates and cutting and gluing the wider pieces and trimming to final size. I will have to use these ideas on my next belts.

I have an idea for a project. A light weight saddle bags to be used as an over the shoulder backpack it would carry more and balance the weight more even front to back. It’s probably already been done.

OLD LEATHER SMITH here, nice Chuck, about 8 years ago a client asked me 2 make a snake belt, now I only do HANDMADE LEATHER so I purchased a few KING COBRA skins which I glued 2. 5/6oz veg tan, I designed my own closer 2 B placed under the head and oval holes In the tail so when worn the head and tail come together, client loved it. I NEVER USE EMBOSSED LEATHER. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

That’s a sexy belt. A matching holster/knife sheath, or at least a holster with the reptile accent or inlay would be a sweet addition. Thank you Sir, as always.

Thanks again Chuck, another great video. I'm working on a new item, Dopp Kit for my father... was wondering if you'd mind doing a more in-depth tutorial on incorporating zippers into leather projects (my first attempt, leather was too short to fit zipper I picked properly on the top of bag). Appreciate all you do... watching your videos keeps me going with this new craft.

I use pricking irons and an awl and an average belt is a 4 hour stitching job. I think my stitches are closer.

Hi Chuck, When you start the second half of the on one side of the belt, where do you place the first stitch? If you start with the same hole, won't that leave a gap in your stitch line? Love your videos. Thank you.
@williampierce5579
@williampierce5579 3 жыл бұрын
No starting in the same hole should leave no gap. It would be a bit of a tighter squeeze though since now it has two threads in it.

Ok, I'm new so if I was to use actual snake skin would it be done the same way?
@williampierce5579
@williampierce5579 3 жыл бұрын
As long as it's tanned yeah it should be the same. Chrome tanned leather with a snake imprint is just way cheaper than actual snakeskin

I am currently working on a belt using one of the belt blanks from Weaver. I’m currently an hour mad a half into hand stitching and only made it about 24/30”. I think I was using thread about 6 times the length of the belt, hoping to make it from one end to the other. I’m not using a stitching pony. (1) is the amount of thread making my stitching ridiculously slow, and (2) does a pony help THAT much? Thanks!
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, It does help a lot, just because you have both hands free to pull the thread through. Obviously it's up to personal preference and some people prefer to not use one but for long lengths of thread - it does help with speed. Hope that helps!

Okay, another great video but I have a question. What is that black strip on your ruler? What is its purpose?
@jskeller6220

It’s a non slip tape to prevent the ruler from sliding. Works very well.

Would Chicago screws work as well as the double-cap rivets?
@overlorddante
@overlorddante 3 жыл бұрын
Of course, just make sure they're tight. They also have the added benefit of easier buckle replacement if you want to change it out. I have a western belt with Chicago screws and they hold up pretty well.
@peterthompson4851
@peterthompson4851 3 жыл бұрын
When using Chicago screws I put a tiny drop of white glue in the hole first. Stops them loosening over time, but can still be removed with a screwdriver. Also works on the tip screws.

How does s18 and barge compare?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, It depends who you ask, I use it on almost all of my projects and love it but, some folks swear by Barge and won't use anything else. If I'm gluing something that won't get stitched like a mouse pad and liner, I will use Barge because it really is the best of the best but I haven't had any trouble with the S-18 on any of my projects.
