For my students looking for ideas for their Pick A Passion project, thisis a fun option. This video is a demonstration of Making a Handbuilt Goblet, Chalice, or Wine Cup Form from Pinching Clay. This method builds on my student’s previous knowledge of making and cleaning pinch cups. The process is a two day approach, allowing both pieces of clay to dry to the leatherhard stage before cleaning and attaching.
The chalice begins with a ball of clay pinched into a cup form, and a second ball pinched into a hollow stem. Once both pieces are leatherhard, we clean them with a combination of surforms or Shredders (Mudtools) and gradually working from metal ribs, to yellow to red ribs. (again these are mudtools) Once both halves are cleaned, then I scored and slipped vigorously and then compressed the attachment. Allow to dry slowly to assist in even drying and even shrinking to avoid stress cracks.

In this video, I am using standard 153, a nice midrange firing stoneware in my classroom.
I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/s...
I started my KZbin channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

I've always called the surforn a rasp or plane. Theese videos are excellent for beginners..every other person showing theese methods are either extremely over elaborated or so dull you cannot follow. I have been into pottery for some time now on and off, so to get inspired and motivated to either throw a piece on the wheel or pinch a bowl or cup I watch pottery videos, I do believe I found a favorite. Great work! Wish I was one of your students, I had terrible art teachers for pottery so I was self taught, you wpuld have saved me alot of mistakes I had to learn on my own.
