My mom read us a book when I was kid. I forget what it was called, but one of the children made "fulminating paste" using a recipe from some book about Woodstock, which featured iron filings as a primary ingredient. The fulminating paste, once mixed, would burst into flames around 24 hours after being made. Now, it might sound like just a made up thing, but as a kid, I was fascinated. The more I learned, the more I realized that it was probably a legitimate recipe that the author either knew or at least knew of, because iron produces heat during oxidation, and iron filings have a very high surface area. Sadly, while I've looked for the recipe multiple times, I've never been able to find it. Anyhow, cool experiment! It might not get hot enough to start a fire, but at least it's still useful application of a slow exothermic reaction using common materals.

Honestly, steel wool and vinegar as a long-lasting (and eco-friendly) wood finish is probably the best use for that rusting process. Of course, it also stains anything else it touches a rust color, even though the color of the wood will be completely dependent on how much tannin the wood has in it.

Sparkler that can melt through an engine block anyone? Steel wool is also handy, in steel state, to start a diy thermal lance made from a new length of car brake line fed with regulated oxygen at one end. At the other end you tear a piece to twist and stuff into the end. Light the steel wool so it goes into ember mode and start feeding oxygen until the more violent reaction starts with the metal brake line. Rainy day idea anyway. Thanks for the infotainment. ps. search YT for "diy thermal lance" for a better idea and to see what they can do, thanks to steel wool. (most vids use a separate oxy/acetylene torch to start the reaction in their tubes, find the wool guy)

@lrfiv
@lrfiv Жыл бұрын
Almost. Soaking steel wool in vinegar and letting it sit will make iron acetate in a colorless solution. Applying it to wood that contains tannins will stain the wood, the more tannin in the wood, the greater the result. High tannin woods will turn black, Red oak turns a rich, warm brown with black grain, etc. After this coloring process you must still apply a varnish over the top (or shellac, or wax, etc). My point being that this trick makes a sort of stain, not a varnish.

I use 50/50 water and vinegar and a ball of steel wool in a glass container. I left that in a cabinet for a few weeks to make a rusty concoction. Then I mix it up with a paint brush and brush it onto wood panels before I burn images with a laser. The rusty liquid is often referred to as "the Kenny Hack" but my dad knows it as "Amish Aging" because it can be used to make wood appear much older than it really is.

you can find handwarmers at any sporting goods store, and dollar stores in winter times sometimes, they come in packs of 2 for 1 dollar.

Combine with vinegar and use on wood to create an antique look on the wood from the way it oxidizes the surface. Add some random scoring before applying the vinegar steel will and finish and it will look pretty old fashioned and collectible. Use fine steel wool to keep it from scratching up the surface.

Rusted razor blades can be substituted for rusted steel wool. For that wow factor add ground-up sparkler dust

Yes, and that's about how the commercial handwarmers are made. Biodegradable too!
