Could you use what's inside of the hand warmers to make thermite or some other kind of flammable material?
@brianm61173 жыл бұрын
Iron can be flammable when introduced to pure oxygen. Don't think it will make a thermite style reaction, but it would be a dangerous fire as its not one that could be put out with water.

I had a friend stuff these in her dry suit (for scuba). As the PPO2 rose, so did the heat, so much so that she had to call the dive. If you’re familiar with PPO2, you can exceed a PPO2 of 1.4-1.6 bar whilst diving. On the surface you can get a maximum PPO2 of 1 bar (100% O2).

On the timelapse bottles, the speed at which they collapsed is more important than the degree to which they collapsed. If all bottles are the same volume and have the same volume of oxygen, then they theoretically collapse to the same degree since the same reduction in oxygen volume would take place. So, the three handwarmers collapsing the bottle faster shows the reaction taking place on a larger scale.
@jdragon6223 жыл бұрын
Can you try it sticking the hand warmers in a more rigid bottle or even a glass bottle? Also try pouring the liquid oxygen into a pile of iron. Great vid BTW!

I would like to see more experiments with the hand warmers, please, love your vids, thanks!
@icollectstories57023 жыл бұрын
Dare ya to put the powder in a blender and press go! I imagine this greatly increases the surface area exposed to oxygen and should use up all the iron in a minute or so. There might be enough binders in the powder to prevent flames or explosions, but starting out with a very small amount might be wise.

I think there is some water in it because iron reacts with water only in the steam form. Some heat released by oxygen and iron's exothermic reaction will easily make the small amount of evenly distributed spread out with a large surface area water into steam. That is again an exothermic reaction, which produces more heat.

A few days late, but I think the timelapse results can be explained a bit differently. I think with Oxygen being the limiting reactant, the same vacuum is produced in each bottle, but the difference is with the water content. In the bottle with six hand warmers, there was six times the amount of water to vaporize and relieve the vacuum.

I think the bottle with the 3 collapsed less cause it had more water vapor to offer, so it collapsed faster then the vapor came into play sloeing and stopping the collapse, similarly the one with just powder had less vapor than the packet one cause some probably evaporated while pouring them in the bottle or got left in the cloth bag
