Its hilarious how many people came here from one piece lol, including me. I was watching it and randomly decided 'i bet i can make a straw hat' and here i am realizing a lot of other people had the same idea lol. Thanks for the video, I am definitely going to make one. Gotta make one with a more rounded top if i want to be the next pirate king.

@@weast2123Same method for pine needles too really. Hat is my next project. Just did a basket with a lid and but a pine needle or grass hat would be sick. I'll stick a pinecone in top and proudly wear that bad boy
@Ensensu210 ай бұрын
I also want to make a hat like that, but as much as I want to, I also want to make it more durable, maybe through the addition of aluminum sheet metal from cans.
@1HorseOpenSlay10 ай бұрын
@Ensensu2 that's a great idea. I am amazed at how extremely durable the one I made is. I added some rows of horse hair. It's really incredible how once it has been bundled and sewn together it is extremely strong. I even dunk it in the river to rinse it off. I rub a balm that I made from beeswax and walnut oil on it a few times a year and it really is almost indestructible.

Very interesting - I could see how you could use that same technique to make baskets with lids. I wonder if there's a substance that you could apply to the finished hat to give it greater durability. Beeswax or some kind of oil maybe?

I saw somewhere that they used to shellac the outside of the straw hat to make it more weatherproof in like the 1800s

I was just in Norfolk Island and the hat weaver there rubs baby oil on the Pandanus leaf hats he makes.
@weast2123 Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, but you might be able to lightly coat it in linseed oil and season it in a similar fashion to seasoning iron cookware. Might make the fibers too brittle, though.

I just harvested a 2ftx6ft area of wheat. I was careful to make sure I grew a strain that gave some really long stalks. I found your vid as I wanted to make a very very wide brim sun hat. Like the ones I’ve seen in Vogue. So this is a doable project.

I will try with my local plants. Maybe one of them will be ok. Can I use natural materials instead of nylon?
@xirensixseo3 жыл бұрын
this is coming a bit late but, personally ive always preferred to use natural materials, or at least, older ones. Nylon will always have higher mechanical properties, however, for a straw hat, we dont exactly need cutting-edge materials. natural thread will work fine! ive observed that nylon tends to bend and twist differently to natural threads, find what works for you :) if you did get around to making it, i hope it worked out well
