Making A Hickory Mallet

Its time for a new mallet in the shop! Watch as a craft this simple round head mallet in hickory. I use a traditional hand tool technique to cut the through mortise. The mallet head is turned on the lathe and attached to the handle using a walnut wedge.

After the handle was put into the head then cut off I'm going why did he do that. Then as you went to place it onto the lathe, it all made sense. You didn't want the handle hole to get chewed up while turning the head. Great project Andy. Thanks for sharing...

You don't have to fill the hole. It is safe enough to turn with the hole in it. I didn't believe it either but I've done it a lot.

Just want to say I came from Matt from Demolition Ranch - Stayed for the artisan approach to wood working. I love the attention to details - chamfering the edges on the wedged portion. This inspired me to go make my own mallet. I dont have a lathe so it will not be round. I have maple and oak in my yard so I guess that's what I'm using. Maple for the head and oak for the handle.
