@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 3 жыл бұрын
Hey JD, I haven't really done any type of side by side testing with a bunch of different resins, but I've been pretty happy with the clarity of Alumilite Clear Slow Set. It's what I used on the x-wing sphere, and it's pretty clear. I know Liquid Diamonds is really clear as well, use that for tube-in pen blanks. I believe Alumilite's new Amazing Clear Cast Plus is pretty clear too, but I haven't actually used it myself yet. Many people like Polyester Resin for its clarity as well. I'd say that any of those should do fine, but I always recommend not just taking my word for it. Ask around to other resin casters to see if you get a consensus on one or two. You can also contact resin manufacturers to see what they recommend for your project

This turned out perfect Zac. I wonder if the resin Ben uses gets hotter? Every time he does one something always melts on him.
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark! I'm not sure how the resin he uses works, but it may be the case. I do know Alumilite Clear Slow Set is formulated to exotherm really low so you can do really large pours
@Yo-Da-Action
@Yo-Da-Action 3 жыл бұрын
Zac's mold and use of two pieces of wood combined makes for a lot less resin in one pour, thus not as much heat in any one spot. Ben only uses one piece of wood and a lot deeper pour..
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 3 жыл бұрын
@@Yo-Da-Action Yeah, but Scott uses one piece of burl only and he never has any issues with them warping either. Unless Ben's shop is significantly hotter than Scott's, it's probably the resin. Only other thing that could be different is the actual piece that he is embedding may not withstand the same amount of heat as the x-wing miniatures

Not sure if it’s because I use Alumalight amazing instead of Alumalight clear slow I am up to 600 grit sanding and it’s clear when it’s wet but as soon as it dries it goes back to being all gray and cloudy with scratches so is it the product or do I need to go higher in my sandpaper grit
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Del, you need to go way higher in grits than 600. After sanding to 1000, I used a buffing paste, then three buffing wheel step
@eddieagha5851
@eddieagha5851 3 жыл бұрын
Turned out fantastic Zac! BTW where did you get that Polishing wheel for the final polish? What's it called? Thanks!
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Eddie! I'm really happy with the results I'm getting using that inertia sander instead of hand sanding, thanks for the tip! It's mind boggling to me why it works better though, love to understand what the difference is aside from the circular motion and different pressure being applied. I got that buffing wheel at McMaster Carr. It's called a string buff. I really like it for the car polish
@eddieagha5851
@eddieagha5851 3 жыл бұрын
@@ZacHiggins thanks! The reason it works better is that you are literally applying multi-axis movement. The sander is spinning in one direction, your hand is moving the whole sander in yet another direction, and the object on the lathe is spinning. so everything is moving in a different direction preventing scratch marks in one direction only. That's why you have to keep your touch light. It sort of gives you the same results as a random orbital sander only better.

IF YOU DONT MIND ME ASKING WHAT SEALER DID YOU PUT ON BEFORE THE EEE SHINE .AND WHAT POLISH DID YOU BUFF IT WITH .THE SECOND TIME.FROM DOUG
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Doug, I just sanded it up to 1000 grit then hit it with the EEE a couple times. I had done one round with EEE before that shot in the video. I was really surprised at how well that EEE worked. I got way better results than any other paste I've tried. Figured I'd try it out since Scott uses it on his hybrid spheres as well as Ben at Ben's Worx. After the EEE I buffed with Tripoly rouge, White Diamond rouge, then Meguiars 105 compound.
@fleetswoodshop3339
@fleetswoodshop3339 3 жыл бұрын
Zac thank you very much. I'll give that process a try I'm working on my second majestic butterfly I just finished the first one. Did the same process except I sanded it up to 12, k which was truly an Overkill and took forever. And then buffed it out. It all had to be done by hand since the butterfly was too big for the buffing wheel but it sure turned out nice. it's called The majestic butterfly it's on my video list if you get a chance check it out and let me know what you think please I would love to hear from you on it. And thank you so very much again it is always truly a pleasure watching you. From Doug
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 3 жыл бұрын
@@fleetswoodshop3339 Yeah, give it a shot sometime and let me know how it goes. I think the inertia sander really helped out on this one too. Hand sanding larger pieces usually takes me forever, but the inertia sander seems to do a really good job at evenly sanding out the scratches from the previous grits. I'm honestly a little baffled by why I get better results with it compared to hand sanding, but every time I've used it the results seemed to be better than any piece I've hand sanded. Then the EEE paste just flat out worked this time. I applied it on two axes of the sphere, and it turned out great, then buffing was a breeze. It's tough to get a perfect polish on delicate things that you have to do by hand. I've hand sanded quite a few pieces too, it's a chore. I'll try to find the video and check it out, sounds awesome!
@fleetswoodshop3339
@fleetswoodshop3339 3 жыл бұрын
Zac thank you so much I certainly will give it a try I've used the EEE but never in that process. I've been using the process of sanding sealer and then OB juice. Buff it up real well and then polish it out. That seemed to work fairly well even on a mixture piece with resin. On a mixture piece the lacquer is my favorite. Except for the downtime waiting to buff it out. But I most definitely appreciate your input. Always a pleasure and a joy watching you. And thank you again so much from Doug

I've seen it done before but no one will give up their secrets. Lol. I've tried laminating the wings first but the resin always creeps in. Any ideas on what to do would be soooo much appreciated :) Thanks for the videos!! -Sara

Hey Sara. Unfortunately I have never done it before myself, and I haven't seen anyone else do it either. I just don't know what might cause the issues when the resin hits it to really guess. Only thing I can think of that might be worth a try is to spray the wings with a clear coat or possibly something like mod podge first, let it fully dry, then cast them
@Sara_London

@@ZacHiggins Thank you for getting back to me! I really appreciate any help I can get! The wings are so delicate the pigment on them even comes off on your fingers if you touch them and especially if they get wet. I'll have to mess with some forms of glue or modge podge.
