I visited Japan many years ago and could not resist bringing home some small pieces of pottery - they were so beautiful and so characteristicly Japanese. But what you do takes it to a whole new level. The video - complete with summer Hydrangeas - takes me right there with you, thank you so much. I only wish I could pick one of your bowls up and feel the texture of your carving anc your glaze.

Thank you for sharing your process and techniques. It's interesting to me how you apply the slip while the piece is still relatively soft greenware. For my part, I would be concerned that the slip could over saturate the pot and distort the shape. Obviously, it doesn't, and it works beautifully. I really like how you placed the pots rim to rim in the drying process to help keep the rims from drying too quickly! It is simply brilliant and easy to do. Your final pieces are elegant and beautiful, yet still keep a rustic quality, which I really enjoy. Many thanks again and blessings to you and yours.

Thank you for the demonstration. I appreciate Karatsu yakiware very much. Twenty years ago I started practice at the Takatori Kiln, in Fukuoka, for too short a time. Coming back to my country I continued doing pottery, but moved to western style, for lack of choice. But my heart is with Japanese pottery. Mishima is beautiful and your craft, admirable.

How wonderful all around. From the peaceful environment and sound, to your incredible skills and beautiful results. Masterful indeed. Can I ask about the use of slip? Why do you choose to use slip instead of an underglaze? Thank you for your work, and for sharing it with us!
@WatajimaPottery Жыл бұрын
Thank you! If you use white glaze to inlay, it will blend with the glaze applied on top, and you won't achieve the desired coloration. Instead, use a high refractory white slip that does not blend with the glaze for inlay.
