Alec, love watching your videos man. Been subscribed to your channel for a little over a year now. You've inspired me to start blacksmithing myself. I make my living as a machinist and doing machine work. Just thought I would try to help you out a little. I'll have to say that your ability to self teach amazes me. However, I did notice that when ur milling steel you are running your spindle and your table incredibly fast. I suggest slowing it down. This will allow you to take a much bigger cut, you will most certainly get a better surface finish, and save a lot of tooling in the future. Blue chips are a bad thing. And sparks are even worse. Unless your machining inconel or titanium. Hope I could help! Keep up the great work! I would look into investing in a coolant mister also
@danhill75257 жыл бұрын
Scrolled through the comments just to see if anyone else had commented this before I was gonna. With a cutter like that I normally run it at about 400-800 rpm taking 2-4mm cuts at a time. I know the cutter can take up to about 10mm at a time, but for the things I do, it's fine. For light work I normally just use a cutting oil depending on how much steel there it, or even WD40, both seem to leave a good enough surface finish.

I must say I have never heard a British accent with such an American attitude before. it is weirdly refreshing. Also it took more than 14 parts to make the katana. wow amazing dedication.

I'm going to say it once more on this video because my previous comment was on an older video. I would really love to see you and your dad work together on a decently large project that puts to use both of your skill sets in an equally impressive and entertaining to watch series of videos. Just throw it in as a single set of videos like any other project, or throw your father/son project into a weekly rotation working on something a bit bigger than normal maybe. Which could help with viewers on your channel. I'd come back at least once a week to watch that. Even though I already try and watch all your videos to the best of my ability.

Milling hint: when the chips are blue, you're running the cutter way too fast. Do yourself a favor and look into speeds and feeds for milling
@williamwestonn7 жыл бұрын
When chips are blue it means that the material is hard and what your running hot cause of friction, its not too fast. this is noting to worry about as long as your not working with tight tolerances. (cause the material will shrink when cooling down.) but i guess most people know this xD The best thing is that you can actually get a really nice finish with the right F and S, and many times, with many harder types of materials you will get "golden rain" and blue Chips" so if your milling i would suggest you go get some tool steel and just experiment from what calculations tells you what speed and feed to go with :) just make sure to use the right tools and if you dont have high speed steel? go slow and use coolant. :)
@chriscoates86917 жыл бұрын
I've cut plenty of materials harder than 1095/15N20 and only time I was throwing blue chips was when I was taking large cuts. Never thrown sparks though, so yeah, he's running it a bit fast and hot. He's gonna burn his bits out prematurely.

I like your videos! It's good to see younger people smithing. I did this, too for roughly twenty five years in North Carolina, New Mexico and West Virginia and retired a number of years ago. I fooled around with blade making on and off and there were elements of that discipline that were interesting, Damascus being one of them, but that's a lot of work to be sure. Generally I used salvaged wrought iron and s-5 or s-7 or any number of high carbon steels but under the hammer (power, that is) I found that I had more problems with the layers wanting to peel and not want to bond as well as when I used a hand hammer which made it incredibly labour intensive. That's probably why I didn't continue to work in it. Knife making took so much time that it was hard to get a good return. Kitchen cutlery was the exception, but that was a specialty market. My main focus was on architectural work; gates, grills, etc. Though I did some more modern pieces what I preferred was emulating the work of Samuel Yellen and other traditional smiths and happily I found a niche that supported me well. Carving was also something that I enjoyed and found that I could incorporate into a lot of my work and that made it easier to pay myself and the shop's bills. I'd be interested in seeing any examples of that sort of thing if you do any. Also, you seem to do much of your work in gas. I had a Sandia forge that I built with six burners (an Artist Blacksmith Association project in 1995) that was handy for heating large scrolls and such, but largely most of my work was done in coal. I'd be interested in also knowing how much you're using your coal forge. Finally, I tried to forge meteoric material as well and found that I had the same result as you. It was almost impossible to cut with a bi metal blade so I had a friend who was a rock hound cut it up on a diamond saw with pretty good success. The problem was that it would fall apart no matter softly I tried to work it. I also tried several commercial fluxes, borax and even powdered mud dauber nests, as was once done by colonial blacksmith's in America several hundred years ago. Those crafty Vikings had some trick. If you ever figure it out I hope you'll make a video because I'd like to know. It's not a burning question in my mind, but I'd sure be interested. Thanks for the good work you do and keep dropping the basket!

What most people forget that the quality of iron in Japan was so poor in Medieval times that Katanas used to break. The Higher quality steel that they used was imported from China and India.

When I was about 25 I went to a job interview for a machinist job , the man looked at me and said what can I help you with ? I replied "I'm here for the machinist job." He looked at me for a few seconds and said "But your not a machinist." I said "How do you know ?" He said "Because your not old enough to be a machinist , maybe a good operator , but not a machinist ." "It takes at least 10 years in a job shop to be a machinist ." After about 15 years in job shops , I knew what he was saying . There's no substitute for experience , and he was right .

That "why" answer earned yourself I lifetime sub. Thats the exact reason I do what I do (working to become a Pilot). Its not often that you find young men with true family values and such a strong head on their shoulders.

Imagine if this was somebody’s first Alec video… a British guy, dressed like a Texan, doing an American cowboy accent, while making a Japanese katana…. there would be questions.
