That 5 minute epoxy is a pain. I quit using it. Im just not fast enough to get things together in time haha. The knife turned out really nice, I like the color.👍 Nice work my friend!

OUTDOORS55 Can relate! I vastly prefer slower epoxies.

Thanks so much. Honored that you watched it. You and FargoFX were the two channels that pushed me over to the edge to get started making videos. I had wanted to for a while but now I have finally started. Glad you liked it there will be more to come. And yeah that epoxy wow that was a bad idea lol.

Great work, my friend. Both the knife and the video are very well done. 👍 cool to see the backstory of this knife... will be featuring it tomorrow or Monday in Subscriber Builds 4.

Thanks mate. I am honored that you watched it. And doubly honored (if that's a thing) that you will put it in your subscriber builds. I had never done a video before so it took me a long time. The commentary, I am not going to wing anymore. I kept saying um yeah and yeah way to much. Didn't realize I did it till Dad pointed it out lol. I love your commentary style. Do you write down what to say or do you wing it?

Is that your first knife? Super job, turned out very nice! If that is your first knife, dang man, even more impressive. Did I hear right that you ground the bevels with the stones? I see you got a 1x (30 it looked like?) sander on the workbench. I use some 500 grit belts for mine to do the finer edge grinding and such, speeds up the process a TON. It'd put an edge on that in about a minute. Go buy you some. You'll love it. Also love your australian accent btw 😃

Thanks Jake. I am actually subbed to you on my private account. It's not my first knife. I have made three from scratch (bar stock, heat treat myself etc) and have made two from a carpenters saw blade. So I guess this is my third saw blade knife with no heat treat, but it was a lot more work than the others. Also I have done a few handles for friends. Which looking back, WOW there is a huge difference between the quality lol. Once I have made 100 it should be even better. It was a mistake to grind the bevels on the edge pro 12-13 degrees per side. Took a good hour. I was listening to pod casts though so wasn't too bad. Next time I will do 90% on the 1x30 I have done that before. I just thought it would be quicker lol. It was only 1mm thick. This is the first video I have ever done so I was surprised by my voice. I asked a couple people, is that how I sound? Some said yes others said it sounds a little deeper. Thanks for stopping by. Can't wait to see more from you as well.

Well done mate ! A very nice little knife, that seems pretty useful ! Making a wooden knife before the real one is important, for your first knives it teaches you how to use the tools, and what can really be done, what will be confortable, etc.. Don't forget to clamp your works before doing anything I hope you were wearing a respirator and glasses, you know safety measures.. Another tip : Peening the pins is important, lots of knifemakers don't do it and only rely on epoxy, which I find not to be a good thing When you peen yoir pins, the holds the scales on permanently, whereasepoxy can break, or you can burn it But even if you want to peen, first glue everything, clamp it, let it dry, and then once it's dry you can peen, this way you can be sure to have everything where you want it to be Anyway, that's pretty impressive to see what you've done with this piece of scrap steel, good job !

Thanks for watching. Considering it only takes 5-10 minutes to make a wooden template it seems wise. When I made my first knife I made a wooden template first. Actually I think I made about 4 or 5 because the handle was uncomfortable lol. Safety gear I had on. I just got a proper respirator (half face) before this video with two filters. I wish I had gotten one sooner. It is 1000x better than any dust mask I have tried. I think you missed the bit where I peened the pins and after sanding them flush I mentioned they were a fair bit wider than the 4mm rod I used. It was a bit long of a video though so I don't blame you. I made a knife out of a builders saw and only used the epoxy and quickly realised that any medium-big flex breaks the epoxy bond and separated the scales from the tang. So peening I concluded is especially important even more so on thin knives. I was worried about peening after the epoxy cured. My thinking is that it may break the bond with all the impact it is undergoing. So I try do it when fitting. Makes a big mess though lol. Glad you liked it thanks for stopping by.

ScottsHobbyz I watch the entire video but since I'm French I may have missed this part 😂 Well actually if you hammer correctly and not too hard, you shouldn't hit the scales and break'the bond, and even if you break the bond, the pins are here to secure the scales to the tang But you're right, the best seems to pin before it's cured So you need a slow cure epoxy 😉

Just got some west systems gflex that I ordered. Apparently it is good stuff for knife making. It is slow cure as well so problem solved. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Great finish, and yes we all know about that 5 minutes apoxy it hardens to fast, 30 Minit set time seems better, .
@scottshobbyz54165 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I was surprised it was able to come out so nice considering what it started as. That 5 min epoxy is a novice mistake. If you are only pinning the handle (not peening) you can do it once you have some experience. But even then I don't think it is worth the stress.

hey guy, I'm trying to make a little drop point "skinner" from a nice little piece of broken hacksaw blade, a Starette blade. It funny cause everyone says, naysayers, "you cannot do that" the teeth are just weilded. yea right, no seem and glass hard everywhere, even after blueing color from fast metal removal. I think it would be fun to just leave the yellow finish with red letters on it near the spine when it's done, and vulcanized rubber handle to it. Cheers. !

Sorry for delayed reply been away from youtube for a bit. I found mine was really hard as well couldn't even file it. Have you made the blade yet? I would like to see it if you have.

Hey man, excellent video. I wish i could edit like that. I think you did a excellent job! id love to have a lil shop like that. Nice accent 😉
@scottshobbyz54166 жыл бұрын
Thanks. This was actually my first ever video so the editing was all new to me. It took me longer to figure out how to edit and turn it into a video than it did to make the knife :( I'd love to have a workshop like that too. It is my dad's shed. One day I will have my own but till then. I forget about the accent thing. Most people I see on KZbin are american so I think nothing of it. Some friends said it sounds like me, some said it's a little deeper. I shouldn't have tried to wing the commentary. I took notes for my mini forge video. You will hear it is better done.

Made a Seax from solid HSS, couldn't drill it or file it. It eats drills and files for breakfast, but holds a razor edge.
@scottshobbyz54164 жыл бұрын
Cool. I actually don't think I have seen a seax in person. Yeah normal drill bits don't touch this steel. They are the same thing really. So it's like trying to drill something with something else just as hard. Doesn't tend to work. Pretty sure it is harder than files too. I had to use a special drill bit to get through. And my technique was bad as I was extremely inexperienced at this point so I busted it on the second hole but managed to make it work still. I got a bunch of industrial hacks saw blades from a garage sale so I will be using it again in the future. Probably going to make a set of wood carving knives.

@@scottshobbyz5416 Lucky dog! Those blades are expensive, but worth it. I just bought an obsolete one on ebay for ~$20. It's 16", so maybe I can make 2 small knives. HSS is a real treasure, don't know why it's not used more. It gets a bad rap about being brittle. If thick enough, it's just as safe as D2. Haven't broken a HSS knife yet, but I don't pry or chop with them. Another good source is HSS "parting tools" or "cutoff tools".

I’m a new subscriber and I reckon your a west Aussie mate . One clue is your using jarrah off cuts?
@scottshobbyz54165 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subbing. Hope you enjoy the other videos too. I have been pretty slow lately getting videos done but hopefully I get some more out soon. I am from east Australia actually. You can get Jarrah at a fair few places as it is used in flooring and decking. I find since you can get meters of it for the price of one set of fancy scales it is good to practice on. Even though it isn't fancy it is a durable hardy wood and I think it looks ok. As I am new to knife making I would rather not ruin a $60 set of scales lol.

i betcha thats m2 steel
@scottshobbyz54166 жыл бұрын
Could well be thanks for stopping by mate. Whatever it was, it formed nasty burrs and was very abrasive resistant. Nasty to work with in the hardened state. But it did polish up well so I was pleased with that.

Is m2 any good for knives?
@Bob_Adkins4 жыл бұрын
@@NS-dx8dq Yes sir! I made a Seax with, and it holds a razor edge like nothing else. Gotta watch breakage on smaller blades, but great otherwise.

Excellent holding edge but quit easy to rust during storing. I made a long butcher knife from solid HSS Eclipse hacksaw blade and i dont need sharpening stone or sharpening steel while butchered 3 cow legs
