The sparks don’t indicate it being hardened steel. It indicates the level of carbon in the steel.

bronze was a lot better at the time compared to iron, at least for the things that ancient peoples were using them for the whole iron age transition mostly happened due to copper shortages, except for a few places where they just straight-up skipped the bronze age
