I appreciate that you show all of the little detours and tangents along the path. A lot of KZbinrs would exclude cleaning the mill table or welding those little bracket bolts. This feels more genuine and gives us some parenthetical “side quests“ to learn from along the arc plot of the video. 👍👍

So you got rid of your home made speed controller and bit the bullet and bought a vfd and switched motors? Any reasons why? Would it still work if I used a treadmill motor and the speed controller you made before?

Yeah the motor blew a brush holder. The little plastic piece that holds the brushes. It had a ton of hours on it and you can’t actually buy the holder piece. So I upgraded to a Vfd and ac motor. The replacement DC motor was the same cost purchased new. I was over it and not willing to try another used one once I saw how awesome this grinder was. It’s just too useful. The DC version with the SCR is good, but if I were to do it again. I’d start with the Vfd and the AC motor.

@@HouseMadeUS if I have the treadmill motor already and only have to spend around 40-50$ to make the simple speed controller it's worth it right? I dont have 400$ for an ac totally enclosed fan cooled motor and vfc personally.

The SCR controller and dc motor definitely do work. I can’t say for how long since mine blew up after a few weeks of use. Now that said it blew up due to a brush and not the controller. I’m in the process of trying to repair the holder with epoxy and will use that with my lathe. We shall see. Good luck with your project.

Interesting, looks like a temper at 950F is optimal? Not sure I’ll do that, I may hit 500 for four hours. Thanks for the info.

@@HouseMadeUS it depends on what rockwell hardness you want in your knife steel. Rockwell 62 is hard and holds a edge . Rockwell 55 would be flexible and lose its edge quicker.. i would do 61r c at 400f

Use Thousands of a inch instead of mm or fractions. Its a lot easier and the standard here. .001" , .187" , .125" etc
