I built two amp stands using soft maple like this. It's harder than it look's especially for me not having a large enough planer or a sanding machine wide enough. Yours are great. Thanks for posting. I'm building 6 end grain shelves for my audio rack now. Thanks again.

Woww.... The best part was the two cuties applying adhesive. :)

The grain showing on each small piece really looks great (well it does to me a woodworker anyway). Hate to see it chopped on (Haha). I always like seeing your twin boys in your videos and especially when they are helping their Dad! Them putting on the glue was probably enjoyable (like painting) for them. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent job! Super surprised that the pores in the oak didn't pop out as much. Guess that is why you used the wax to seal it some. How do you like the rotex 150? Does it make life a ton easier for finishing cutting boards?
@mtmwood10 жыл бұрын
European oak is less porous than American white and red oak. Rotex 150 is very good.

Good thick board but oak splits easily on the end grain if this board is to be used for chopping shouldn't it have a deep horizontal spline around the perimeter?
@R_an_D3 жыл бұрын
To all the people in the U.S. and Canada that are asking if a cutting board can be make from oak... Do not use red oak, it is too porous. White oak has tight grain on the sides and end grain. Boards made from both edge grain and end grain are very durable.
@mtmwood3 жыл бұрын
We use European oak. It is less porous than American oaks. I think it is the best wood for end grain cutting boards. Even better than maple or walnut.
@willford847510 жыл бұрын
Great job! I would be interesting to weigh the board after the finish had been applied to how much it took on board.

Some people say you shouldn’t use Oak, what is your thought on this? I have some 100+ year old oak, great tight grain, I want to use on a cutting board, what do you think about using it? Thank you always enjoy your designs.
@briarfox6375 жыл бұрын
I love the look of oak, but be careful planing end grain bc it's very risky running it through the machine. Better to belt sand it.

Did you steam the end grain after sanding and then take back the raised grain? I didn't see it in the video, wondered if it had been edited out?

why are American oaks not good?? I have some rough cut white and red oak i was thinking of using to make a board.?
@mtmwood8 жыл бұрын
They are more porous than European oak.
@jbender10248 жыл бұрын
could i use white oak safely, just need to seal it more often??
@mtmwood8 жыл бұрын
johnny wishbone I've never worked with the white oak, but I think it can be used. Very good characteristics with the exception of shrinkage. So use only kiln dried lumber.
@ryanbates70376 жыл бұрын
Our oak is just fine.I've had a white oak end grain board for over a year now. Just requires increased conditioner in the beginning to get a good seal.

Excellent craftsmanship! I have seen several of the end grain videos now and enjoy them a lot. I understand the mineral oil portion, but what does the mineral oil and beeswax finish do?
@mtmwood9 жыл бұрын
It is just more durable natural finishing.

Great video of course! I have heard that you shouldn't use oak for end grain cutting boards because of the open grain structure. Have you had any issues with oak or customer complaints?
@mtmwood4 жыл бұрын
European oak is more dense and less porous that American oaks. I think it the best wood for end grain cutting boards.
@thehusband124 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the reply. Can I still use American red oak? Does it impact the look more so than the function?
@mtmwood4 жыл бұрын
@@thehusband12 Yes, of course. The pore size of any wood is incomparably larger than the size of the bacterium
@jamesburriss10864 жыл бұрын
The beeswax seals the grain leaving the board very resistant to liquids penetrating

Oak isn’t generally recommended for cutting boards because of its large open grain. Doesn’t seem like a good idea because of bacteria.

Hello. Is Oak a good choice?? A problem with oak is that when it's bare (no finish of any kind), the tannic acid reacts with iron and causes dark stains. It will stain the wood, the food, your hands and it doesn't come off easily. I know you use mineral oil to finish your boards. But have you had any feedback on this cuttting board? Best regards. T.Robertsen
@mtmwood9 жыл бұрын
I think that European oak is the best choice for end grain cutting boards. Oil and beeswax make good protection. I sold several thousands oak boards, only positive feedback. My wife have all possible boards, but use mainly oak.:)
@Norwegianwoodworker9 жыл бұрын
mtmwood Ok. Thanks for the feedback. I have a lot !! of thick long oak boards that I cut down 4-5 years ago. A short trip in the kill'n and I will make some christmas presents. : ) Have a nice day.

HI, once again a nice video. Had you ever used Olivewood ? Is it good for endgrain cutting boards?
@mtmwood10 жыл бұрын
No, it is a bad choice. Do not use edible oils for board treatment, such as sunflower, olive, etc., because over time they will become bitter and give this taste to foodstuff.
@grandmastergeorgez10 жыл бұрын
Tell me about it! i am an Olivewood turner and i always have bitter taste in my mouth at my shop... I have even grown to like it ! ((( As for oiling up my creations i use mineral oil and beeswax to seal it if i can. Take care mate!
