Jimmy DiResta shows how he made this beautiful leather bag with no stitching required. And, we've got the pattern available to download so you can build along with him! The bag is made from 6/7 oz. brown latigo leather and solid copper rivets are used to hold the bag together in place of stitching.

Lots of criticisms in the comments. Just remember people, we build to please ourselves and we don't force others to buy. If our work is pleasing to them, it sells and our efforts were successful.

i havent seen any negative critisism, ive seen some contructive critisism for future ideas and additions he could add (i.e interchangable p0ouches for the ends) but nothing negative

I just finished making this last night as my first real leatherworking project, it was challenging but great! I brought it in to work today to try it out and people are floored that I was able to make something like this by hand. Great video and thank you for the pattern!

I made one very similar. Didn't have long enough straps so mine didn't go all around, and I added some loops for tools inside and added a pocket. Made it for a friend. He loved it. It's nice when your hard work is appreciated. My first riveting ever and now I do that more than stitching. Thanks both of you. I have since bought the Diresta razor blade. I need to make a Scabbard or sheath for it. Fun stuff.

I too have used rivets on projects in lieu of stitching on several projects with mixed acceptance by others . The customers that purchased those projects were all that mattered . Good job ,nice video .thanks

Another very cool video jimmy the exposed rivets are super cool Fyi , as luck would have it in my 40s i suffered a traumatic brain Injury that paralyzed parts of my left leg and arm in order to walk i use a cane and a fiberglass leg brace with a hinged knee one of the things they use on these braces are Stainless Steel rivets that are called Speedy Rivets which have a smooth head or cap on watch side the guys that install them professionally do use a special press but i was in a bind years ago and hand bucked one together using a hammer and a Antique bench vise the next time i visited the builde of that brace he looked at it and asked me about the new strap on it and said did i do that ? i told him nope i did it and why /how he asked me before i left that day if i ever wanted to try a new trade he would hire me btw i have one brace that i wear for swimming and showering and those rivets have held up pretty well as they basically hold the velcro straps onto the fiberglass they do add a sewn leather onto the velcro straps to reinforce that area a bit for the rivet and i would bet those would work very well for many of your leather crafts

OLD LEATHER SMITH here, If U build 4 urself U can make it anyway U want 2, if U do what I do, after the sit down YOU DO WHAT THE CLIENT WANTS, I BELIEVE U did a GREAT JOB, 2 suggestions, creasing leather, put a few drops of dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle of water, spray on what you want 2 fold, it will B easier and stay, I prefer water and BEES WAX on edge's, the bee's wax closes the edges and makes them shine, I told 1 of my students I go through 1 lb. of Bee's wax a year, this is 1 reason why, GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

At about the 4:05 mark you use a wood carving scoop to make it easier to bend the leather at the point where you want it to bend and hold. Where do you get this tool, please?
@minerblue9641
@minerblue9641 4 жыл бұрын
Use a file or a straight edge with sandpaper taped to the tool. Coarse sandpaper will probably work. Medium sandpaper works also. Fine would probably take too much time. The numbers on sandpaper describe the aggregate size. The smaller the number the more coarse the sandpaper is. 1200 grit sandpaper is so fine that it feels like velvet. It will put a high polish on metal, almost a mirror finish. But don't sand it one time and expect a mirror finish. It takes work and elbow grease to get a mirror finish.

Hi Joanne, I believe that is a woodworking tool so a hardware should have it. If you click the link in the video description we linked a v-gouge that is made to do the same thing, just specific to leatherwork. Hope that helps!

I like your designs and videos right up to the point where you started using copper rivets?????copper rivets corrode to green mess i never use them . and one other thing i believe you put the rivets in the wrong way allowing for catches just like a hang nail i have been using rapid rivets for years with no problems i just had to vent a little ????????please send a reply
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rick, You can put the rivets in either way - the true way is the way Jimmy put them in and by peening them there are no sharp edges and won't catch/snag anything. The solid copper rivets will get a nice patina to them as they age. But, as with any medium, everybody has their own taste so choose the materials that work for you and your products! We hope this answers your questions!
