This wallet is made from oiled goatskin, which is a very soft but strong and durable leather.
The leather is from www.aacrack.co.uk
I used 0.8mm tiger thread in midbrown, which you can buy from

Grew up watching my parents sewing leather, this brought back the sights and smells and feels of those days. Even the tools. Wow. What a beautiful video. Thank you for posting.

A beautiful video. I’m talking about the quality of the shots; it’s pace and the music. That showed real talent in itself. As for the leatherwork, real skill - the skiving was excellent; to do it in one sweep is extremely difficult and shows great control and a sharp, sharp knife. It also showed the (potential) relaxing pace of leather work. Precision cutting and pricking. The careful stitching to get the perfect result. I know that, if you do this to make a living, you need to do the job as quickly as possible without sacrificing quality but, if you do it for pleasure as I do, it is so relaxing. If I had made this wallet, I would have only done two things differently . Differently - not better. I would have used thinner thread but the same colour match to the leather as, too often, I think contrasting colour thread can look gauche. Secondly, I would have edged creased particularly the edges of the slot pieces to give a more finished look. As I say, different, not better. I could watch your videos just for pleasure. As it is, I get the pleasure and learn things. So, thank you very much

Beautiful work (both the wallet and the video), with neatness and attention to detail - congratulations and thanks for sharing! Was the oiled goatskin already finished (in other words, is it "tool-able"? Did you have to dye it?) Thank you!
@KinnariLeather
@KinnariLeather 8 жыл бұрын
+Andrei Gotia It is pre-dyed and pre-finished, thus not suitable for tooling (it didn´t even take my makers mark properly ;-)).

I notice that there's a difference in length between the inner and outer panels of the wallet, to account for the thickness of the leather when folded. How much do you give in your designs?

Enjoy watching your making process. Do you have any advice to share on sewing soft leather? I am trying out some nappa leather to make a passholder for my friend. But the turn out is a bit sloppy, in the sense that the sides are bended (probably I tighten too much). Any particular tips to handle soft leather when hand sewing :) ?
@KinnariLeather
@KinnariLeather 8 жыл бұрын
+Jia Jun Chua It sounds like you tighten the thread too much, yes. But I can´t tell really, as I would have to see it to give proper advice. But generally speaking, soft/thin leather needs very little tension.

Why do you do the initial buffing of the outside of the leather, before you make any measurements, in the first 20 seconds of the video? I've noticed a few people do it. Is it to improve the natural shine of the leather?
@KinnariLeather
@KinnariLeather 7 жыл бұрын
Basically to get rid of dust and finish/wax residue, in this case it was oil and a little bit dust. It doesn´t matter in which order you do it. You can just as well make the measurements first and then buff it.

Nice work! any advice on skiving and skiving knife? you really do a nice job with that.thanks for sharing the video. John G.
@KinnariLeather
@KinnariLeather 8 жыл бұрын
+John Galv Thank you. Skiving needs a steady hand, which you get by practicing :-). As for the knife, I use german cobblers/paring knives. The brand is called "Tina". You may get one from your local cobbler. It needs to be razor sharp, meaning you should also practice sharpening it at a very "shallow" angle. And last but not least, you have to strop it frequently. Hope that helps

The hide that you're using- did you obtain it already dyed/finished? Or is that a piece of vegtan that you dyed, polished, etc?
@KinnariLeather
@KinnariLeather 6 жыл бұрын
I bought it dyed and finished. It was some seriously nice leather, very beautiful and a dream to work with. I got it from A&A Crack in the UK. It's this one www.aacrack.co.uk/animal/goat/vegetable-tanned-oiled-goats-rich-mahogany-08-11.html

Excellent! I always love finding new leather outlets, especially for high quality stuff. I've never worked with goatskin, it always seemed a touch flimsy, but after seeing the hide you use, it was probably just some bad leather I was looking at. Thank you!
@KinnariLeather
@KinnariLeather 6 жыл бұрын
Don't be fooled by the suppleness of goatskin. It is actually a very strong and stress resistant leather. The oh so famous shell cordovan tears or cracks before a good quality goatskin does.

Am I being stupid, I love this wallet and would very much like to make one, but I can't see anywhere a template I can use to make the thing. Also, sometimes when templates *are* given, they are far too small when printed. Am I going crazy? Keep up the good work, by the way... (although I wish I could join in!)
@KinnariLeather
@KinnariLeather 7 жыл бұрын
I think I can help you with the printing being too small. If it´s pdf, you should make sure to print it in 100% size (in the printing options). Had that issue myself. Otherwise, if you need templates: Ian atkinson and Nigel armitage sell wallet patterns.

Kinnari Leather thanks very much for taking the time to reply. I'm currently recovering from theist cancer and a Laryngectomy, and have recovered enough now that I want to start fulfilling my long time wish to learn leather craft. But I'm still ill enough to need as much basic help as I can find. I have all the bits a beginner needs, just trying to find a template to get me off the blocks
