This is Weaver's Canyon Rose leather split down to 3oz (they will cut and split hides for you using their splitting service, you can even get one hide split to multiple weights in strips!) It's a really beautiful, underutilized hide in our opinion, and we also use Hermann Oak's bridle leather a lot doing the same thing. And of course, no thanks needed - we should have been vocal a long time ago and have plans forming to support more of this work long-term!

I'm newer to leatherwork. Why do you shave and scratch the back? I see some people do it and some not. Theoretically wouldn't it weaken the product?

nope It's just to rough up waxy leather so that the glue will stick better - you don't have to do it to all hides, we usually do it with hot stuffed and heavily oiled bridles, etc

This is a channel that supports any and all people having access to leather crafting information and the freedom to exist in a safe and loving environment to, amongst other things, practice their craft - a freedom that many black people do not have. If you don't agree with that we'd actually prefer you to leave, so this works out well.
