Making a Leather Toiletry Kit
One of the things we've wanted to make is a simple, high quality, luxury toiletry bag. We've started to design one out of leather, and our idea in making a toiletry bag (or dopp kit) is that it looks like a small piece of luggage, not something you'd simply pack away. We Started with our first sample design by taking notes from our tool bags, and translating that design into a smaller version of a leather bag to be used as a toiletry bag.
The design is fairly simple, but has some important details. all hardware is solid brass, so that it will not be effected by water. The side pieces are fully stitched so that no small pieces of kit can fall out, and the fold in the side pieces allow the toiletry kit to seal shut without bulky flaps. We've also made sure the dimensions are large enough to fit long things like tooth brushes and shaving supplies, but not too large so as to not fit in carry on luggage :)

I would love to know how you knew the stitching holes on the man bag would align to the gussets. In your other "bag videos" I believe you glued both pieces together and then punched after. These bag videos are among my favorite, interesting to watch the work flow ;)

Piles of Poodles I was going to ask the same question. It’s something that I’ve wondered about with some of my items (I’m just a hobbyist). It would make everything easier if I knew how to do that because trying to use the chisels when glued together is a super tough angle.

@Corter

basically just eyeball it when we're making samples like this. In patterns we'll put the hole in the pattern and trace the outline with an awl so it's centered

@Corter
@Corter 4 жыл бұрын
grab a decent skiving knife and just start practicing :) Make sure to be super, super careful and keep your knife really, really sharp. Start with oily hides first to get the movements down, then you can move to drier tannages like the natural veg we're using here - that's usually the one I have the hardest time with. I just can't stress enough to be careful, make sure your fingers are always behind the blade!
