Regarding a better grommet setter, I use the ones from Tandy Leather. They work great. They consist of an anvil and a setter and you just need to have your own hammer to pound the two pieces together. It's pretty easy and the grommet looks perfect each time. Hope this helps!! ❤

Thank you! I will definitely look into that one then!!

I tend to over do the hammering, and end up with ugly, squished grommets. I was hoping the big cast iron one would make them come out right every time!

I too use the two piece grommet setting. But use a rubber mallet to hammer the grommets. Depending on what fabric I use, sometime I use a awl or a hole punch. Using fay check on the holes.

If the size of the grommets is the same as the setting stamps, it is probably the grommet. Try a different brand or different height. Too high can squash them. I use 3 different heights depending on thickness of the material. Rolling grommets work better for me then splitting grommets. ( rolls or splits over the washer at the back)

I'm going to second the theory that the problem is likely with the grommets themselves and not the setter or user skill. Many years ago I made corsets regularly, so have one of those heavy iron presses. I once got a "bad" batch of nickle grommets that I wasn't able to set consistently.

(Back in the 1980's, with no clue and never having actually touched a real corset, I set out to make corsets for each of the females and one of the males in our cast of The Importance of Being Earnest. They looked great-ish. I had no clue what to use for boning - I read that they used whale bone in the day. Bumfuzzled, I consulted the Agricultural Science teacher. He mulled it over and produced some handcut, and finished, bones out of a thin spring steel. That worked so beautifully I wish I had a tame shop guy/gal to make some more! :) )

I think you should be called Queen of Sparkles and Shiny Things! Both of those corsets are absolutely stunning. And I think it's extra hard to make such structured garment in shiny fabric without wrinkles. Early in the summer I decided to hand sew a 1886 riding corset, in definitely more plain fabric (some unbleached sturdy cotton/linen blend I had in my stash) but with pretty printed twill tape for boning channels and I still haven't finished it. I'm not even half way of sewing channels, so I'm incredibly impressed that you can make whole corsets that quickly. And I was just to scared to sew it on a machine, but I think I have no other choice if I want it to be finished 😂

I love how the outfit turned out for you. Its very flattering and looks amazing. That you learned from the black corset is really cool as many folks these days are too inscure to admit to any kind of mistake no matter how minor. As to tje grommet tool, could be yours is defective. I do hammer because any other way aggrevates the arthritis in my hands. About twenty years ago, I started working on a few corsets. They were bleh. Then I had some folks commission some from me as part of their more intimate lingerie. They drove me crazy not understanding how things are supposed to fit etc. Then they insisted that they knew more than I did, which they didn't. Never again will I have such costomers. I wear stays as a bodice over a shirt or dress. No boning. Corsets in a wheelchair makes life even more of a living hell than what already exists. These days I will help some folks with their projects when they get stuck. Usually part of their Goth wardrobe.

Hah! I think I have that same grommet setter that I *also* bought 10-15 years ago. I don't have a whole lot of problems out of mine, though - could it be the die is loose or misshappen? Also, I put boning chambers on both sides of my grommets with a tiny overlap for a bit of extra stability, if that makes any sense. Maybe that will help? I love your channel, it's my happy place.
@TheClosetHistorian Жыл бұрын

I also put boning channels on either side on my grommets, about an inch apart. It lends a lot of stability to the back lacing and also to putting the grommets in.

For setting grommets, I use the kind you hammer since my hands hate the squeezy kind. For corsetry, it has been recommended by other historical corset making people who post on youtube that you use an awl to make the hole instead of punching through the fabric - this will help prevent the grommets from pulling out of the fabric over time. Also, it seems recommended to have steel boning between the grommets and the open side. I think it effectively helps force the fabric into a straight line in the back which will also help prevent that "diamond" in the lacing of the back. If you do place steel bones to stabilize your grommets, your corset should never lace completely shut or you will definitely feel it on your spine *ouch*. A 1" to 2" gap is typical for the lacing gap. You could also pad the corset around the bust and hips if you are still seeing an issue of a diamond-shaped gap where your lacing is and do not want to use steel boning to stabilize that area. Thanks for another awesome video!! You're gorgeous! (Edited to add the word "steel" to describe the boning I was talking about)

Regarding the grommet center: sometimes cheaping out on tools is a bad thing and sometimes expensive tools are still shit. If you have a hard time squeezing it consider using a adjustable wrench to close the handles or see if you can find a lever style grommet setter. Also if you're having a hard time getting the holes cut through fabric you can always take a round file which you can get a set of tiny around files at Dollar tree and I sharpened my grommet hole cutter and it made getting through two layers of wool easier

Beautiful corset. You really get a maximum metallic look from that fabric. On the grommets are you punching a hole in the fabric and fitting the grommet through before pressing or letting the grommet cut the fabric. I generally have better luck punching a hole. Clamping the base and making sure the set screw on the bottom part is tight to make sure it doesn't wobble also helps.

two things on the grommet setter: a better quality grommet will be more consistent, regardless of the setter that you use. This is a lesson I learned the hard way. I get my grommets from Lacis, because it's local to me (their website is a hilarious travesty). My press isn't from Lacis, but the dies I use are. I use a table mounted grommet press with dies you can change out for various tools. It's a beast, and you still have to open up the holes in the corset and insert the grommet by hand before you press it or it gets wonky. I've tried self-drilling grommets, and they did not work, it was ... not good.

Just making my first corset and am dreading eyelets. I may just make them by hand.

Made my corset - it fitted beautifully, and it gave me a waist reduction of.....absolutely zero. Nada. 😢 not sqishy at all.

I personally love using denim for making corsets. A little stretchy, but so much easier to bind the edges than coutil. I stopped mid project because of how frustrating it was to catch the threads by hand.

Also regarding the grommet setter, I bought a big one for setting curtain grommets. For the large #12 grommets, 2 separate dies are required: one for cutting and one for pressing the grommets. For the tiny ones that you put on corsets, I assume that the cutting and grommet pressing are using a single set of dies. The dies are delicate and can get damaged AND that not all (at least curtain) grommets are the exact size. I got a cheaper brand and 60% were mangled (and they looked like they fit just fine on the press, but they were off maybe 1/16" or 1/32"), so I only buy grommets from the mfg of my press. My suggestions are: check your dies to see if there is any damage, AND check the exact size because the tolerance is so small between the press and the actual grommets.

Bianca, you look absolutely ethereal in the reveal of the copper ensemble! The contact lenses were a really nice touch with the outfit too. I did not know I needed an over the top metallic ethereal queen getup but I think I have to try and make my first corset now.

Soooooo shiny pretty!!! Some corsets that I own have two grommets set closer together at the waist line to aid in cinching. xxxxx

I really miss Denver Fabrics, I was super bummed when they closed. I hadn't heard of Allen's, I will have to check them out. I am always on the lookout for fabric stores that have a selection of vintage-y kinds of stuff.

The copper corset is gorgeous! I'm blown away by how it looks like metal because it lays so perfectly smooth. I was just now reminded of how my mom had a pair of copper colored heels back in the 90's and I was obsessed with them. Of course I had child sized feet and couldn't wear them, but the color was mesmerizing, just like this corset.

I just finished watching this -loved it!- and noticed that Shannon Makes has a corset video too🤷🏻♀️ And lo and behold, she has experience with grommets! She talks about it at about minute 13:19 and the video is called Waists for Halloween or something like that. I’m so glad you put this out! I loved the corset outfits in your look book, and I’m glad to see how they came together

You're a better man than me. I like doing my corsets the old fashioned way -- I buy them. Master seamstress degree can be had online. Rhode Island Sewing Network offers one. Back in my day, you could only get it from a school in France. How things have changed. I wonder if Foundations Revealed could help with corset fittings.

I hope you can find a better grommet tool! I don't like mine either. I got one from Farthingales and it's just one metal rod that you hit with a hammer (and it has a hole punch piece too), and apparently isn't made to go with a base, so you just have to use a hard flat surface. It makes it very easy to accidentally deform the eyelets, and for some reason the ones I ordered this time have a longer shank than the ones I got from them 8 years ago, and they don't really press together all the way.
