Making a Moss Garden from Scratch (Satisfying & Relaxing)

I've been wanting to make a dish moss garden for quite awhile now. I figured I would do it a little differently with this one and present it in a long format, relaxing type of video. I think the video speaks for itself, but I'll outline the process below to give you a better idea of what's happening.
I started by building the glass dish. This is built exactly the same as my DIY aquariums. If you want more information on this process, then I recommend watching this video • Making a 0.8 Gallon NA... It's really easy once you get past the learning curve of cutting glass. Alternatively you could use something like an acrylic organizer tray.
Once the dish was built I set up the garden. I started by integrating Capillary Rope. These ropes will pull the water in the false bottom up to the moss and help keep it hydrated between watering. Then I made a sand false bottom, which was followed by a layer of activated carbon (charcoal). Everything was topped off with my tropical substrate mix and finally the moss. In case you're wondering, this one features five different types of moss including Badge Moss, Fern Moss, Haircap Moss, Hypnum Moss and Thread Moss.
The long-term maintenance of this setup is very simple. The dish just needs watered once a day to keep the moss hydrated. Longer “drought” periods can be implemented, but constant hydration will produce optimal results. As for lighting pretty much any LED will get the job done. I typically use something in the 900-2500 lumen range, but most lights should work.
Check out the videos below for more content on moss that could help get you started.

I cant believe I just watched a full hour of someone building a little glassbox for his collection of moss. I think it's the incredible attention to detail that draws me in. The deliberate movements you make, the timing of changes in the background music, the way the black cloth is folded underneath the table, the way the tools are arranged on your work-bench, the way your supply-boxes are stacked... Everything is so neat and done with care, it seems more like a way of life than a performance... is this performance-art? hahaha, I'm way too sucked into this!

I realize this video isn't entirely new, but I gotta say I love the format! Perfect for putting on before going to sleep, contemplating the day while still having something going on (my add brain can't have total silence until I'm dead asleep, and that takes time). Reading the comments I understand it's impossible to please everyone at the same time, but IMO it could actually be even a bit calmer, lol. To my ears, the sounds from working were a bit sharp in contrast to the music (which I really like by the way), and mixing them a bit softer would really make this a perfect vid (for me) to wind down after a stressful day. Mind you, this really is nitpicking. I did enjoy the video on the whole, and I do appreciate the amount of work you must've put into it! Just wanted to give my ¢2 :)

A wonderful video. I just watched your previous video, the short update, and now I’m watching this one. I like both formats and I hope you continue with both. I would wish that the shorter ones predominate since I’m more likely to have 10-20 minutes to watch rather than an hour plus. That being said, it is nice to sit back and watch you work when I have the time to spare. I think I’ll save your long form videos until I can give them the time they deserve. You can be my evening television. Your work station is a marvel as is your craftsmanship. You’re so sure handed. You work like making little glass boxes is what you do for a living. I also have to say something about the camera work. Every shot is well framed and perfectly lit. As for the editing, it is masterful: dozens of shots, setups and angles, yet the video flows like real time. It’s rare to see KZbin videos with such cinematic continuity. Well done.

I thought the same thing, no way there’s only one camera, but when I looked for the cam from previous shot, none was there, I still can barely believe only one camera!

My anxiety went through the roof everytime you broke the glass, then you dropped one. Since this is 2 years after the fact, oh well. Dude, the things you create are simply amazing, a true master of your craft. Just found your channel and have been binging for a couple weeks now. Keep em coming. Also watching the clock on the wall, a lot of work put into this project.

Awesome video! I have a strange thing happening with your videos... Now I don't believe in much, but every time I have ideas of things I want to create (but never actually make) you bring out a video related to it! I have been checking out mosses that I wanted to bring inside before winter and keep in a shallow container and you release this video! I also was considering to make a biotope aquarium with a wild caugh BABY sunfish! (you showed us your babies from the pond) I was trying to find a small and shallow glass container with slopped sides (back pane is taller than the front) (I never found one) to make a small open air terrarium with plants and a waterfall what do you know? You released a video making a tabletop waterfall! I was chocked!

This was so interesting to watch, thank you for the calming hour you've given me this afternoon. I have to ask, the cotton? rope, is that used as a sort of filter? Spray the moss with water, that water will then be absorbed through the rope down past the carbon layer to the sand where it will essentially keep exchanging water from top to bottom? I'm just guessing here, but would be so happy if you could answer. Thank you again

It's to wick water up from the bottom to keep everything nice and moist.
@nyxx8196
@nyxx8196 4 жыл бұрын
Simply put the rope is an artificial root. As you know, moss depends solely on the moisture that comes to it from top as they don't have very long roots to collect water from the bottom. The rope will soak up the water from the bottom so that then the moss can use it at the top. This also means the water from the bottom won't have to be drained as it'll be constantly recycled.

Could you make something with a fountain with food colouring and some "magical looking" plants? I think it could be very fun! Unless the plants don't like the food colouring

Thank you so much for this! Not only for sharing the process and making it therapeutic to watch but for showing how to make a box. I have been planing to do this for my toad and needed a little inspiration. We had heavy rain overnight and this morning we’re going to collect mosses etc for his bin and for a new mini terrarium. 🤗🤗

I have an challenge for you! To make a bioactive desert/dry tank! And if you don't want one yourself, maybe you can do as the scorpion tank (making it for someone else). Bioactive desert is something new thet people are still experimenting with. I personally would like an enclosure with Tropiocolotes tripolitanus or some other Tropiocolotes or Sthenodactylus. With desert I don't mean 10 cm a little bit humid coco fiber like some people keep leopard geckos in. But a real desert, with humid under the substrate, other cleanup crew (blue death feinging beetles, mealworms and their beetles and isopods that surviver the little dryer climate) and stuff. Just a tip of something interesting that I'd like to see! Sorry for my bad english, I'm from Sweden.
