Your welcome! These signs can be a little tricky but if you plan then ahead of time it works out ok

I would like to watch you use the edge guide and I would love to watch the multi-layered painting process. Thanks for well done, informative videos. I love them all.

If you watch the "welcome to our home" video, I use the sledge guide in that one. The painting was all done with brushes, a bit time consuming! Painting is my least favourite part. Thank you very much for watching!

How do you stain the different layers? Would love to see video on what products you use and how to do it. I’ve tried 5 times and can’t get it to look right.
@JohnathonWhittaker3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tristan, I use Chestnut wood stains and use a brush to apply. I start at the greatest depth first and work my way up. The chestnut stains blend very well so even if I make a little mistake, its easy to correct

Thanks for this great video, I wish if you can help me where to buy the the bit you are using.
@JohnathonWhittaker3 жыл бұрын
hi there, the bits I use are 1/8th shank bits, commonly known as cnc bits. they fit nicely into a collet adapter and work with any 1/4 or 1/2" router. I mainly use around 7 different bits of this size, 10,15,20,30 an 60 degree v-grove bits, and then spiral up-cut bits, starting from 1mm up to 3mm. these are quite fragile and take a little getting used to but are great for fine detail. you can generally get them on amazon or ebay. what country are you in? maybe I can find a link for you

Oh my word, your work is incredible!!! Did you make you’re own base plate? Do you have a tutorial on that by any chance? I’d also love the links to your router bits as well! Fabulous work.
@JohnathonWhittaker5 жыл бұрын
hi there, thanks for the great comments! I am currently doing a video on how to do the base plates, should be up in the next week or so. I will add some links in the video description to the bits and tools I use, I will post for both England and the us. if you cant access them, send me a message and thanks for watching

Very nice indeed!! I loved the three tiers which really make every thing POP OUT!! Question please, How do you apply your patterns to the surface? It looks like there illumination coming from inside your router, does it have a light in the router? Do you hand paint (stain) all the different colors by hand? Really a great video!! Thank you much enjoyed, August

August Calderaro hi there, I use a lazer printer and cellulose thinners to transfer the images. If you look at my other videos you wilk see some techniques on how i Do it
@augustcalderaro37976 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sir much appreciated. You speak about the 1 mm, 1.5 mm and 3 mm spiral upcut bits I can not find them anywhere. I have tried Amazon, E- Bay and general search, nothing. Alan suggest the PCB CNC bits which I have ordered. So where can one purchase the spiral up cut bits? Thanks again, August

Can there be a 3 layer over lay ? 3 words or phrases on top of each other ?
@JohnathonWhittaker4 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, i dont see why not. You could add in as much text as you want. The challenge would be the finish and making each word stand out. The way to do that would be some space around each word and perhaps good contrasting colours. I have done a few plaques amd coats of arms that have up to six different layers
@robertackerman35004 жыл бұрын
Do you have a video of more then 2 . I'm struggling with the 3 layers .

What do you charge for a piece like this?!?
@JohnathonWhittaker3 жыл бұрын
I normally charge a minimum price of about £100 for plaques like these. Then it depends on the amount of text, wood type and whether or not I add images. This exact sign went for £150

Hello John love the way you work and the outcome of it .im learning this trade self thought and you tube vids like your s was wondering if you have any tips on how to base price this type of work any help greatly appreciated And you gained a new follower for life keep up the great work
@JohnathonWhittaker4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rodolfo, thanks for.the great compliment and I am glad my.videos are helping ! Pricing can be tricky and it does depend in you location but basic pricing is, what's your material cost, wood, bits, paint etc. Then how complex is the sign? A sign with no images and text only can be cheaper.. Then it.comes.to.material costs. I use two types of wood, pine and oak. Oak being the more expensive so the prices change a little. What i did was make an excel sheet. Figure out your base price for a sign, add in the wood difference and also add a image category. I charge by the square foot for text, around £50, images an additional £5 - £10 , specialist wood another £5 - £10. I also charge for installing if the client wants me to and that's an additional £20. Design only is £10. Pricing was just as hard to figure out as carving in the first place!Then there's shipping as well, you need to.account for shipping and packaging. Don't be discouraged by all this, ask your post office questions, find the cheapest way to ship. Be honest with tour client and have fun!

Johnathon Whittaker will be waiting . Can you put your Price you get in American Dollars.
@JohnathonWhittaker5 жыл бұрын
@@johncoonradtjr.5141 I am not sure what price I quoted in this, 1£ is worth about $1.30. If you add about 20% to any price I give, that will be roughly the cost in US dollars
