The Art of Boat Building

Күн бұрын

The plane adjusting mallet is used for tapping the iron or blade of the plane to gain more depth of the cut. A tap on the top of the body near the throat will retract the iron for a shallower cut. In this episode Bob builds a brass mallet to adjust the new curved bottom plane in built in the last episode. The walnut and brass hammer is designed to complement the walnut hand plane.
“If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.”

Loved seeing you drawing... reminded me of sitting across from my father at his drawing table, the smell of pencil sharpenings and cigarette smoke mixed with old paper plans of previous buildings he had designed is my fondest childhood memory.

Nice work. Just a small tip from an old humble teacher. Of course it's not a heavy duty tool but a diagonal wedge you would have more pressure between wood and brass on the 4 sides of the housing then two small wedges and esthetically nicer. Keep up the good work and be safe.

Just a small detail, if I can be so bold. On the bottom of the brass piece that’s is to become the hammer head might I suggest filling a small flat where the handle is to meet it so that the round stock does not leave a gap. It’s a beautiful piece and I think this small detail might be the only addition. Thank you for another good video.

When in doubt, make it a work of art. And, it can't hurt to make the plans works of art either. I see why my woodworking isn't what it could be; I wasn't a sculptor first! It's those little nuances, like the brass tube through the lanyard hole and maple wedges, that draw attention through their subtlety. Very beautiful.

Tools, types/hardness of pencils, tricks and techniques? I'm a cad designer and beginning woodworker and it would be a great help. Again, thanks for taking the time and effort to make these videos.
