This week's video is all about throwing and trimming a stoneware pourer that has a thrown spout, as compared to a pulled one, like you might have seen in my recent video that was solely about how to create spouts. Lots of you guys commented about that particular vessel, so I thought I should probably make a video dedicated to it. Thanks for watching!

That's very kind of you to say. The interest can be a loud, jarring place that's polarising and tiring. I hope these videos make for some calm amongst all that.

I’ve been obsessed with the hidden foot lately 🫶🏻 all my pots this year have them. Beautiful spouts, I’ll have to try this technique.

Spraying the pieces with water after attaching the spouts is a great idea! I’ll start doing that as cracked seams are the biggest source of failure for me at this moment. Thanks for always providing learning opportunities and inspiration!

Watching your videos about throwing brings back fond memories of working with clay in crafts lessons while doing my IGCSEs. I have been tempted to acquire a wheel and a kiln since, and the temptation is not lessened by your videos. thank you for sharing, and for the inspiration.

Of course I made it to the end, Florian! I was riveted. Such a delicate process. I am way too much of a slob at this point to even try--that cutting a hole in a thinly trimmed pot and adding an appendage? Yikes. But it is completely inspirational and aspirational to watch you and imagine doing such a thing!

The slight curve does look nicer assuming it pours well. looking forward to seeing how these will look and work once glazed and fired.

Florian you have single handedly taught me to throw and exceed all my peers, and it’s honestly crazy how much you have taught me. I do have a question though, and that is: how do I keep a wide base throughout the throwing process? I’ve started with a 12” diameter base before and somehow by the end it’s half the size. I think it might be because I am accidentally digging my knuckle into the wrong place to pull up clay but I thought you were supposed to do that into the base.
@floriangadsby
@floriangadsby 27 күн бұрын
You simply have to be strict when throwing, if you've made an initial base that's 12" wide, when you press in you can't push in too much and you must push out from the inside enough to counter your inward pressing tendencies. Beyond that, with practice, you'll get it. It's a common issue to run into when you're learning. And HELL YES! Glad to hear the videos have been helpful.

Hello Florian! Hello florian do you think you could go over the speed of your wheel at the different steps in the process? Such as the speed from centering to pulling then shaping. Thank you so much for always providing such detailed videos! I always learn so much from them! ❤

I didn't realize until today that those little tools have two names, and both of them are strange: ribs and kidneys :)
@xbaczewska4197
@xbaczewska4197 25 күн бұрын
In my experience, kidney is more of a Britishism, whereas Americans say rib. My (American) pottery classmates look at me funny when I say 'metal kidney' [accentuating the T in metal, of course].

Why do you spray your pots with water before puting vinyl on top to let them dry. To homogenize the dampness throughout the pot(the spout isnt as dry as the body)?

Unless you have a well, in the USA the water is treated with a lot of chemicals. Is the water you use treated and if it is does it affect the clay?
