This is part 2 of a 2 showing how I make a handmade leather sheath for a Puukko knife.
The birch wood used was a gift from a friend in Finland called Osmo, he is a master at making this style of knife. Osmo's channel is called The Topicala.

That’s the way it goes Jim! Very nicely performed scandi style knife sheath making. It is evident that you have got good knowledge of leather works and the final product is beautiful. I liked especially about the mystery leather decorative band around the sheath mouth! Cheers, Osmo

Really fascinating to see just how many skills you have in your locker Jim, enjoyed the knife making ,but as a retired tanner loved watching how you utilized one of the most underrated and maligned Substrates known to man, don’t let the misinformed do gooders persuade you to use plastic rubbish disguised as Vegan Leather or one of the other misnomers.

Thank you very much David. Yes I love working with leather, I find wet moulding a fascinating process. There is something very pleasing about making something from natural products like wood and leather, I think it must come from deep within us. Cheers Jim

A beautiful knife build as well as leather sheath to match. Yesterday, after the knife build, I was hoping the sheath was going to be a matching wood sheath. It's probably more trouble than worth the effort, but that wood is spectacular for a knife. A very fine job on both videos. Thanks for sharing your builds.

To help seat the knife in the guard, slide it on and make an outline of the blade on the bolster then using a dental burr and an engraving tool, remove 1mm or so of the blade shape from the face of the bolster so the blade actually seats in it slightly. Really helps make the knife look finished.
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 4 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for watching Robert. Yes I have done that in the past although a really well fitting bolster should look like the blade passes through it. Cheers Jim

The little gap between blade and bolster is a nitpick, overall the knife came out excellent! I have been making puukko knives for a couple years myself, I thoroughly enjoy making the sheaths and blades, the handles can be tricky but I take great satisfaction in making things and really enjoyed your videos on this one.

Hello Jim. During C19 lockdown here in the UK I also re-started my knife making, using a Puronvarsi blade. The tangs really are a weird shape and I found by relieving metal from centre of the handle side of the pommel, it was much easier to tap the bolster onto the tang and get a good fit. The gap you ended up with would annoy me every time I picked the knife up, so I can fully sympathise! It also makes you appreciate how good Osmo and Malanika are at their craft. Excellent leather work too. Subscribed ;)

Have you tried Kraft- Tex yet Jim? It is a type of fabric made of paper which you can sew. If you wet it & crumple it then dry flat it actually looks like leather. I used it to make myself a type of holster,not for a gun, worked out great.

Is there no way to reset the blade Jim? I know it's taken the shine off that project for you. Great project as always though
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. Unfortunately I can’t reset the blade without destroying the handle. If I had realised sooner before the epoxy had fully cured I could have possibly knocked the tang through and reset it but I didn’t spot the gap until I removed the masking tape near the end of the build. It will just have to haunt me. Cheers Jim
