The vinyl I used was hard to stretch ,I wish I had chose a different material because I could have had less creases but it didn't turn out too bad .
My initial idea with this was to have a mini 6 can fridge in one arm and have guitar effects and controls hidden in the other but it was too hard to make it look good with the vinyl, but as it is it's a very comfortable gaming chair that I can play music and TV thru or just chill! .
The side arms are bolted on and removable so it will fit thru any doorway easily
I intended to have it lock into position using gate latches underneath attached to a release lever but there was enough resistance off the springs that they didn't seem necessary.
thank you for watching .
Steve

2x4 frames are fine. Years ago, I went with an older, and at the time, much wealthier relative to an upscale furniture store. I noticed one of the display models for a $3,500 little couch was missing the little white fabric on the underside which hides the interior. While no one was looking I tilted up the couch and looked inside. It was made of B/C plywood, some MDF, an maybe some scrap oak at stress points. All the upscale value was in the upholstery. Made a point of checking hidden woodwork ever since. My experience has been: regardless of price, if it doesn't show, the woodwork is usually no better than what you could do yourself out in your garage with materials bought at Home Depot. Don't be intimidated by upholstery. Upholstery is important in many cases. It's where the "rubber meets the road" so to speak but if comfort through customization is your goal it's ultimate the functional frame that counts and basic upholstery is neither that technically difficult nor expensive.

Thanks for the video. Smart design and well executed. I've been patching my recliner back into usefulness for the last few years trying to avoid spending the $1.5K they ask for the one I like. Mine crumbles at the pivot locations because those are made with OSB. I scabbed on plywood at those places and that lasts longer.

5 bonus points for the mudflap girl on your front panels! Overall, great job! I mean, how many people have ever tried to build an overstuffed chair let alone a recliner? A couple of tips for you. When you're doing a flat panel like your seat bottom in this chair, you did fine up to a point. Pull the vinyl taut, then put a staple in the middle of each side of the rectangle. Work your way outward (to the left and to the right of that center staple,) a couple of staples at a time on each side of the rectangle. That moves any potential wrinkles to the corners. Then work your corners. Some gentle (very gentle) use of a heat gun set on low temp will soften that vinyl right up and allow you to pull smooth corners. When you were pulling the vinyl over the arms and the front panels: Again, some gentle persuasion with a heat gun set on low will soften that vinyl right up and make it easier to pull. You will always get wrinkles on an arm like that - softening the vinyl will make them smaller and smoother. A little bit of contact cement at that transition from the flat side to the round arm bolster will neaten that kind of transition right up. All in all, great job! I don't think you realize just how ambitious of a job this was. I think you pulled it off (see what I did there?) quite nicely!

Impressive ! Growing up in South Florida my best freind in high school had a father that owned and operated a Upholstery shop that built Custom Furniture for Yachts mostly on many occasions i would help out doing deliveries or whatever else my friends Dad needed as he would pay us in Cash the Company hada Full time Carpenter that. Would knock out the frames and structures of the furniture and the Upholstery guys would do their magic i was always fascinated on how basic the structures were and on how light they were before foam and Fabric My friends Dad really did Amazing work and they made a lot of money in that shop because the mark up on anything in the Marine Trade is usually pretty high and their Salesmen would really jack up the profit margins for the small business that did Go over and beyond on Customer Service as that was one of the reasons they paid me and other guys cash to work on Saturdays and Sundays to meet the delivery dates of course as teenagers we were just happy to get Beer Money any way we could ! Ironically as a Adult i became a Professional Woodworker myself for over 20 years and one of my hobbies is Sewing Marine Canvas and Vinyl on my own Boats and Vintage Automobiles. As i bought and self taught myself how to sew on a walking Foot Sewing Machine many years ago

Old rope/string /white fabric remnants, speakers and the mudflap decals about $30 Lol all in all probably $140 ,it's mostly reclaimed ,I don't know how much they are to buy but it took a couple weekend's to do and a ton of building it in my head while saving funds for the vinyl ,and while it's far from perfect it's comfy as hell lol ,thank you for watching man

that was a killer idea and it look like your construction was a hell of a lot stronger than those overpriced pieces of crap they sell with the plywood. do you happen to have plans for that design? the only problem I see with it is I'd have to figure out some way to get the leg lift up on it a little higher but overall very nice by the way would you be interested in a sticker swap with me?

+Opa's Workshop thanks man , sorry I just kinda wing it ,I don't think I measured anything lol so don't have any plans ,the leg lift could be higher if I put the hinge in a different position but it seemed OK when I sat on it the first time , thanks for watching
