You want an original helmet to look as new as possible. You want a repro to look as used as possible.

Great video. One tip I do want to give is if you use light coats of neatsfoot oil on the leather it will darken it and you won't have as much of a mess next time.

It’s funny on how people only focus on the M35 helmet and if you were to wear one they, ( the public ) probably call you a N*s* but you wear this helmet and most people won’t even take a second bat an eye. ( just a thought )

Very nicely done. wanting to restore a german helmet that has been post-war repainted but there aren't many for sale here in NL nor in Belgium on your variant of our Marktplaats not too long ago, some guy about 15km from where i live found an original M38, full normandy camo with sawdust and all in near amazing condition in a crate in his barn (i live to the east of Nijmegen, 30 min to an hour ish) and put it up for sale not knowing what he had. he was quite surprised to say the least when he saw the bids go up to the 5 thousand euro mark haha!

Being somewhat long in the tooth and with no place to go and nothing to do if I ever got there I purchased a repro. German paratroop helmet with the idea of aging it. I want to remove the liner and when the helmet is repainted put it in the oven to bake a spell. I do not know who manufactured this particular helmet but it was inexpensive and very well constructed. The project is for my own amusement not to be involved in fraud etc. I enjoyed your tutorial!

thanks! was exactly why i did this project / had time for it :)

@@wardetectorist Hello - finally got around to working on my project. Used a red oxide to prime and a textured paint for a base and then a gray that might even be near the correct color. I taped off areas for the two decals hoping that they might looked recessed but with "Solvent Set" they sank into the paint fine. Now it is time (with the wife's permission) to give the shell a slow bake in the oven. The liner is out and I am trying to do some light aging. A challenging project but fun.

What type glue do you use to affix the decal? “Elmers” white glue or similar white glue? Or, …?

You need to go to a riverside and pick up some sharp gravel and small grit. Rub it all over the parts which would get most abuse from daily life, and not so much in other areas. Small scratches all over, then bury it for a month to let the soil get to it and give the bare areas you’ve scratched a surface rust. Use black boot polish to fill in and accentuate the scratches, then give it a clear coat over.

Met vernis op waterbasis zou het wel lukken over de decal. Wel goede tip om dat binnenwerk te schilderen. Is dat een beits? Lak?

I really like your way of aging helmets. Any tips on aging decals without ruining them?
@wardetectorist8 ай бұрын
Thanks! And for the decals if you want to keep the decals and aging as “original” as possible i’d reccomend Just going a little easy on those spots, not brush them to hard and dont try to clean them as much, basically Just being a bit carefull around them when you weather / clean the helmet👍

Thank you! It will be finished after I finish my other project (the ⚡️⚡️ helmet ‘relic’ project) and I’ll do a more in depth video explaining why I used this certain type of camo, together with illustrations of original ones used in my area during fighting in September of 1944
