Thanks for rhe handy video! I just want to say though, when you quench the metal you arent softening it. Quenching hardens the metal. You have to cool it slowly for it to soften. Youll find the metal much easier to work with if you cool is slowly after heating

It depends on the metal. She said it was sterling silver and it dosent harden trough quenching. But there are silver alloys that do.

Hey Jo... IM 57 and worked too hard at construction all my life...yesterday I found some old silver-plated rings at second hand store. I was hoping to have an antiques roadshow moment but no luck. I have been really getting into lapidary lately and have spent hundreds of Covid social distancing hours finding agate, jasper and anything that has something special. I bought a rock tumbler ...dremmel....tile saw all thinking it would be fun shaping them and maybe making jewelry of some sort ( I am thinking if I can't work anymore it would be a great hobby).I came across a site for making spoon rings and went down the rabbit hole called google and started thinking to make Christmas presents this year. after watching several tutorials into the wee hours last night I fell asleep, didn't shut down my computer so....when I woke up this morning your video was in the Queue ready to play. I don't know when and where epiphany defines our fates and inspiration explodes us into answers we never dreamed to ask.ourselves.but I do know having reason and purpose in life will provide the warmth of happiness and fulfillment that defines us. I felt inspiration so strong after this video that luck has laid out my destiny...( next comment down will explain my excitement)

to anneal correctly is to cool the piece as slowly as possible. To rapidly cool it you've harden it.
@mr-x76896 ай бұрын
That depends on what metal you are working with. Sterling Silver isen't one of them, but there are silver alloys that can be. But in essence. If you want to properly aneal things, or Normalize it as we blacksmiths call it. you heat it up untill its slightly glows, then set it down on a gypsum or specialized ceramic block for jewlery (Dont remember their name), and just let it cool down to room temperature on it s own. It takes a bit of time, but given the thickness of the spoon, it shuldent be mutch more than a minute or so.

What pickle solution you use? Does it need to be hot to place silver ring ? Thavks Great job
@midnightjo1327Сағат бұрын
@MegaJadon I'm using Sparex no. 2. I find if you use the sharpie method to anneal, you don't need to heat the pickle. I usually only heat it if I'm getting the metal hot enough for soldering

Great video Midnight Jo. Very easy to follow. What brand of polish are you using on the spoon ring?
@midnightjo1327 Жыл бұрын
This is the blue polish from Harbor Freight. I also like the Luxi blue for a final polish with an untreated muslin buff. These days I finish all my sterling with HF & treated buff the the luxi and an untreated buff

Y HEAT? Im new at this and all the videos I've watch they just started bending it. no heat. what the dif? how much do you charge per ring
@midnightjo13272 жыл бұрын
I anneal when working with sterling to help prevent breakage. I don't anneal silverplate or stainless. I charge $25/ring when using your flatware. My retail prices range from $25 up

....I hope to still have thirty good years in me (fingers crossed) to fill ,but since my injury depression has set in and an empty feeling has manifested itself in the pit of my stomach. as i am writing this warmth is washing over me unveiling inspiration and know ing it is all good. I donèt know if you have any advice you can share on#1: are there any courses I can take to become a jeweler... #2 what rudimentary equipment should I buy to learn on and #3....THANK YOU JO!!!!. I never thought a random 3 miute video that magically appeared on my screen would change my life. Thanks to your inspiration I just had a vision of myself wearing Loupe glasses huched over a wooden bench next to the fire in my wood cabin, and making the Finest peice I have ever made in the thirty years since I saw this video. If I could call on you for advice during this endevour it would be so appreciated...I'll keep in touch ...Im laughing right know at all the things i've learned and having them come together so perfectly. You may have changed my life because feeling like I do right now is wonderful. thank YOU.

Hi Tim, thanks for watching, I'm happy I could inspire! I actually haven't taken a jewelry course since high school haha, but I've always been handy and my husband has helped a good amount with how to do things. This is the age of information, I would refer you right here to KZbin, there's great info all around us. If you're looking at getting into flatware jewelry and have some money to invest I recommend a 1 ton arbor press and tooling from Flatwearable - they have their own KZbin channel explaining how to use their products. If you're not looking to invest heavily and just get your toes wet there's a $40ish dollar bender on Etsy.com. Happy making!

Hey Jamie sorry if i spelled that wrong. I really am interested in learning this. How do i go about it? Thank you for your time
@midnightjo13273 ай бұрын
It depends on how much you want to invest into it! The main tools I use are an arbor press with Flatwearable attachments (they sell kits). I'd call the Flatwearable sets the Cadillac of spoon tools, and best for heavy production (I am not affiliated). They also have great support, including instructional videos and an amazing FB group. If you want to go more the hobby route I recommend using a vice, soft faced mallet and one of these (I started using a similar tool, you'd also need a steel mandrel for sizing): www.etsy.com/listing/113534337/spoon-ring-bender-for-making All that said, there's tonssss of way to make them, I've seen people use tree stumps, a rawhide mallet and a steel mandrel. Pepe also makes a ring bending tool that a lot of people use to make them. So lots of options 😂

this is so cool! Just wondering, If you wanted to keep the enamel as part of the ring design, how would you prevent it from breaking?

You'd have to keep it flat which would be very difficult the way that I make rings, might also be uncomfortable as a ring
