Oh, I see your motivation and your power is growing. For me you are the greatest game dev for this little console. I'm sad a little bit that the hype is going down, but I guess in near future it would be back. Good job!

I think if the shipping stuff catches up people might be more interested. We'll see, but as long as I'm having fun making games for the Playdate I'll keep going.

Hey, it's really cool to see Scrabdackle mentioned here! Intentionally simple art styles are super accessible IMO, that's a great new step to try this time while expanding your skills incrementally project by project! There's a lot of cool and deceptively easy ways to make something simple 'pop' and feel alive with even a simple style like this, too - will be interested to see what you end up with! (Also, I agree with another comment that 3 frames will give you a better result for this style than 2, without really being noticeably more work! It'll help shift the way it feels from 'flickering' to 'undulating' in a good kind of way.)

Wow what a surprise - the man himself! Looking forward to the release of Scrabdackle. And I'm definitely planning on switching to the 3 frame route.

You should maybe make a game similar to Undertale. Maybe a short strange adventure game with a unique story and fighting mechanics or such? (don't forget a creepy character that breaks the fourth wall)
@SquidGodDev

That would definitely be a cool project to try, though I'll need to play Undertale first 😬😬

the scope redicule could have been a pointing hand, I think this is a missed oppurtunity because you play cards with your hands :D I am looking forward to more videos of you making games since there is a lot to learn :D

It really is cool to see your actual talents as a game developer just improve with each little process, in very specific areas. At this point, (and idk how much of this is just editing! heheh) it seems your workflow is really efficient, and you know what parts of your game to lead with and prioritize. Like, even just the card animation stuff already looks great

I really love hearing about your philosophy and thought processes to game development. As an aspiring game dev and someone who looks up to your work, I find this aspect extremely helpful as it allows me to extract big ideas that I can use to develop my own games. Keep up the great work, the consistency, and the love you put into your content, it will surely pay off one day! Cheers man :)

Only gripe is that the crank is not getting a use in the game so far. Otherwise it's looking pretty fun!
@SquidGodDev
@SquidGodDev Жыл бұрын
Original plan is to undock the crank to pull up your deck to view it, and dock it to put it away, but I'm still thinking through the core game mechanics so I might come up with another use case.
@Tuskbumper
@Tuskbumper Жыл бұрын
@@SquidGodDev I think one of the problems with the playdate and it's devs is that the crank is under utilized. I can't say I have any idea to bring to the table but nothing is stopping this game from being playable from other devices if that makes sense

Definitely do a video on coroutines, they're kind of interesting and people should get a better idea of how they work. Although it might help to talk about them generically rather than in the context of Lua. For instance, implementing them in C can be fun and they're super easy to understand that way with no language specific features to back them up.
@SquidGodDev
@SquidGodDev Жыл бұрын
There are some Playdate specific coroutine quirks that I might focus on that comes from the update loop itself being a coroutine, so I was thinking of going more specific rather than general actually 😅 but I'll consider the general case
@anon_y_mousse
@anon_y_mousse Жыл бұрын
@@SquidGodDev I didn't know they made the main update loop a coroutine. That's really interesting. Maybe talk about both?

Interesting to hear about your favorite devs. They seem like the opposite of many popular indie devs like Eric Barone and Toby Fox, who spend a long time just making one game. I'm not saying that's what you should do - after all, lots of little games seems perfect for the Playdate! Just don't spread yourself too thin churning games out, it's OK to take some time on a larger project! (P.s. I LOVE deckbuilders, and especially short ones, so this is a day-one purchase for me :))
@SquidGodDev
@SquidGodDev Жыл бұрын
I think it just fits my motivation style more. It's hard for me to stick to one project since I don't have a concept of a "dream" game. But I think this project will be a little bit of a longer one so maybe it'll strike a middle ground.

This is way cool that you are forced to keep your projects small, relatively, because of the limitations of the device itself. Small projects is definitely the way to go to get better quickly. But it’s so hard to stick tooooo 😩 feature creep for the lose..

Hi I just wonder, why do you work full time as a software engineer and make gamea in your free time ? Why didn't u choose to be a full time game developer if so ? I see most of game dev related content creators don't work full time game dev. Why ?
@SquidGodDev

Full time game development income is not very stable. I currently make about ~5-10 times less money doing game development than my full time job, so I'll need to get better at making games before I can make the switch.
