Making a Secondary Alcohol Called Benzhydrol

Benzhydrol, also called diphenylmethanol, is an interesting secondary alcohol which can be made via a Grignard reaction.

you cannot just TLC stuff with an rf of 0.9 and assume it worked - you need to use a less polar eluent, otherwise everything will come together in one big blob

Oh... I remember one of my university synthesis... it was triphenylmethanol... through Grignard reaction. Funniest part was to prepare Grignard reagent (slowly adding Ph-Br to magnesium in dry diethyl ether. Reaction is exothermic and starts suddenly... one must not miss the moment to put ice bath)

Grignard is more fun, but reducing benzophenone with Zn powder is easier and a lot cheaper...

Benzophenone lab synthesis is a kinda weird, especially the purification part. Only pyrolysis of benzoates -- zinc, barium, calcium, ferrous -- looks as promising as it necessary for amateur chemistry

Reduction with NaBH4 gives a sparkling white product even before recrystallisation. Zn dust reduction a la Orgsyn works well, but it needs vigorous stirring, and the product came out yellow. It took repeated recrystallisations to obtain white fluffy needles. First using ethanol, then twice with petroleum ether.

this can also be made with the Grignard reaction using bromobenzene and ethyl formate, if you don't have access to benzaldehyde ☺

Benzaldehyde is much cheaper than the excess bromobenzene and magnesium

@@dimaminiailo3723 usually it is, but since the product is a symmetrical alcohol, its good to remember you can make other ones by "self condensation". you usually don't have the exact corresponding aldehyde for any alkyl halide you want to use.

A clever fellow. The use of magnesium in other reactions powered much of the Swiss economy during the early parts of the last century. Cosmetics and flavorings. And the manufacturing of heroin and meth. The laws and attitudes were much different then. See the PBS Documentary 'WW Speed,' as a reference.

Seeing that tetraphenylethylene molecule reminded me of Gomberg's dimer, the stable, persistent triphenylmethyl radical, as well as tetraphenylmethane. Could you try synthesizing those? :-D Edit: Nice video, by the way! I have one question, however: seeing you use a grignard reagent instead of reducing benzophenone has me wondering if you have no benzophenone?

Thats correct I didn´t have benzophenone around but I had bromobenzene. Might get benzophenone soon and try another method to make diphenylmethanol.

I keep having a problem with drying ethanol with 3a molecular sieves, everytime I add the sieves after the proper sitting time the ethanol is always cloudy! And I can't filter it out whatsoever! What am I doing wrong? I'd appreciate you're opinion!
