Afternoon Charlie. Great model of a signal gantry and as in your commentary most layouts just have single upright platform end signal be it a colour light or semaphore ......🤔 But what you’ve just made is a simple but really affective colour light signal gantry anyone could do with a bit of patience and watching your tutorial 👍 Great Friday afternoon viewing sat in my lorry in rainy Mold North Wales next to where the old station was which is now Tesco 😢 Have a nice bank holiday weekend Stevie.

Over the years I have used lighting, even on my semaphores, but I have cheated on my current railway by using coloured sequins. I know you will throw your hands up in horror, but visitors often remark about the illuminated signals. Depending on the angle of viewing we see either red or green, no matter what it is supposed to be showing. I do enjoy your presentations, wholesome, honest & packed with experience. Thank you.

Interesting to watch this. I became interested in cantilevered gantry signals and came up with a very workable design for them with a part Dapol, part scratch built concept. They work very well and look very interesting. I see many like them on Southern and Western routes. Nice video, Rob

Hiya, nice video as usual. The cabling on, 'real' signals would be multi-cored swa in black and glanded into the head. We on the other hand have three single wires so, heat shrink tubing moulded to shape all the way to the left hand end, an 's' bend from the head to straight run over flat horizontal tray where you had the flat box. For the route to underneath I liked the vertical square tube, ie trunking not cable tray. Drinking straws run across to the vertical from each heads short heat shrink and black painted would also work.

Very nice build and like the way you made you choice of which to use. Soldering of the brass signal bridge looked good also, if you plan on doing more for your layout or the club layout, maybe take a look in on using and RSU (Resistance Soldering Unit) they are used to build brass steam and diesel engines and work great and you can get the as cheap as $169.00 dollars (US). Very easy to work with and there are a number of videos with demos of these units!!! Enjoyed the video as always! Cheers!! David Muse

After a day and a half installing 7 Cobalts and wiring them up (5 to go) I needed a break and turned to another of your videos for some R&R to find one of my favourite subjects - signals & gantries. TBH I really like the Airfix versions (esp painted flat German green, the walkway in wood and with all the handrail posts installed and cotton or wire fed through. They really do look the part IMHO). I bought 3 original kits in the old boxes (not the Dapol plasticene versions) and have combined 2 into an extended one like you have (took some careful planning on the girder panels) and a std version. I have drilled out the lamp holders to take tiny GOW bulbs at low voltage so heat should be minimal (it was before I found LEDS). Anyway, your idea of the Plastrut box section is great; it was the one thing bugging me how to feed the wires through, so thanks for that and I will pick some up from the model shop in Munich next month. Further, I also bought several packs of the Modelscene Light Signals www.gaugemaster.com/item_details.asp?code=PE5094, not least because they are a great price for a twin pack BUT that they come with the switch boxes. I will similarly drill these out and install LEDS. All the signals will be connected to the aux output on the Cobalts so I can see from a distance what routes are set quickly. I also agree with you on brass PE kits - they look fabulous but v expensive and take alot to build. I have a couple of Ratio semaphores to build too and their sprues annoy me being in a closed loop making it hard to cut out. I also think I have a couple of those Berko kits I picked up at a Train Fair years ago to try out. Anyway, all good stuff Charlie and thanks again for the Evergreen/Plastrut section solution, great stuff PS Try Revell Contacta glue for plastic kits - it has a very useful long nozzle like a humming bird.

@@ChadwickModelRailway Small update - managed to source the Evergreen box section online from a great FR ebay shop so on with that next week. I located the Eckon/Berko kits which ironically are a packaged version of the gantry and Modelscene DIY idea; I am just trying to source some finer cable like the Eckon kits as the Viessman 0.14 section cable I have may be a little oversize. Cheers

Very good Charlie. I may go this way as well. Only on revision 10 of my layout! One suggestion, looking at the picture of the real gantry you can see the cables going to the lights. I assume they are attached to some cable trays somehow. You could have put your cables in some black tubing and run it the same way. Looks more original? Keep up the good work. Cheers. Peter

Hi Charlie, The signal gantry looks excellent! I think doing a brass kit and using superglue rather than solder might be a possibility too but for kitbashing I think plastic is a little more forgiving. No need to worry about the wires I don't think because there would have been some in real life for controlling the signal so once covered in abit of grey I think it won't matter at all. @@ChadwickModelRailway Hi Charlie, I have read through your excellent video but it does not go on to the fitting of the walkway (maint. platform). The only way I could think of doing this. I moved the signal heads to the walkway which has safety railings fitted. Another way could be to use the cable trunking as a walkway with the signals positioned as you have in your video. This would need the gantry framework to be cut to allow access at the top of the steps. Best wishes Peter

Hi Charlie can i just give a little advise as i love your presntation but it is concerning your soldering ,so here we go ,buy a proper pair of wire strippers one that just drags the insulation a 16 of an inch and not takes it all the way off you then twist the insulation until that tightens the inner cable cable then pull the insulation off and dont keep touching the inner cable with your hands ever again because you can make it difficult for yourself as you are transfering grease off your hands on to the cable you are going to solder and human hands always carry a slight oileness in there skin so dont ever tought the bit you are going to solder ever again and your solding will be the envy of all my very best wishes Brian

Hi Charlie. You say you ran out of plasticweld. The solvent they use (written on the bottle) is Dicloromethane which you can buy on ebay for about £10 for a Litre... that's less than the cost of 3x 57ml bottles of Plasticweld... the equivalent of 17.5 bottles for £10!! Buy in bulk and refill your Plasticweld bottles when it gets empty! You can also buy Methyl Ethyl Ketone (aka Butone) for even less, which is the same as Slaters 'Mek pak'. Cheers Dave

Hello there, this video was extremely useful as I have been pondering over signal gantries for ages. Due to my layout being LNER Im going to have to find Some semaphore signals for my gantry which has proven rather hard. I just wanted to enquire into how you would go about building a signal gantry for 4 lines plus? As I'm thinking brass would be wise but I'm confident I could buy a couple of basic plastic kits and with a little scratch building I could get a realistic looking Gantry. Thanks again for this very useful and helpful Video.........James

After much careful deliberation I've decided to give myself a challenge and model the modern era. Meaning a lot of scratch-building. Due to me living in east anglia I want to create a layout that will serve as a memory. This is because abellio is going through the process of replacing all the older locomotives and I think its the end of an era as these lovely British built locomotives, such as the class 90, will be taken away from passenger duties. So I want to capture it as a memory and I'm debating whether I should create a channel documenting the building. Thanks, James

I decided to re build the layout in dual purpose modern image with the ability to convert to 1958 68 , and 1980s to 2000s . I bought hard board and intended fitting the back scenes to the hard board then installing . now hears my point .you used the paste on variety . seemed to work great and you had a bit of wiggle room . 3mins in i can see a Red, Green n white wire's i assume the red wire leads to the red light n the green to the green light? only thing couisious me is the white wire.... which would go to power aka bus line right?

Hi, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the video. Yes the the red and green are for their respective heads and to the white you connect the supplied resistor. Then it’s just a case of connecting the power. Peco make ideal switches for this. Regards Charlie

It looks nice indeed! What are these signals called? Starting signals, platform signals, platform starting signals? Don't they lack a yellow light... why are they two-aspect only?
@ChadwickModelRailway
@ChadwickModelRailway 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Gabor, The are Platform Signals. They simply stop or start trains. Therefore, no yellow is required.

@@ChadwickModelRailway Thank you! What if the next signal is at "Danger"? Can't they be cleared? Or is the next signal a distant signal that never has a "Danger" aspect?
@ChadwickModelRailway
@ChadwickModelRailway 5 жыл бұрын
That’s a good point but I don’t believe that the train would be allowed out of the station if the next Signals was a red.

I can't help noticeing that you can't or should I say; I can't hear the first few words, you're saying. It's as if the mike isn't turned on the first few seconds. It might not be important. but I would like to listen from the beginnig instead of this kind of abrupt start. I'm sure that it's a small technical problem that is easy for you to fix ;-) or you could just wait three seconds, before you begin talking. I'm by the way watching you exellent videoes on a PC. I don't know if that has any cignificance. Regards Steen.
