My name is Carolyn Doughty and I am sculptor and Doll Artist at Dreams Reborn.
This series of videos will be showing me making baby Tarra - from a clay sculpt, into a silicone baby.
• Part One in the series shows you how I make a silicone glove mould from the clay sculpt.
• Part Two shows you how I make a shell mother mould, cut a seam, and remove the clay sculpt.
• Part Three shows you how I pour a silicone baby using the mould
• Part Four shows you how I pull the baby from the mould and fix any seams or imperfections ready for painting.
• Part Five and Six - which I haven't yet recorded so will follow on later, will show you how I paint the baby, matt her and then root her using a fine needle and mohair.
I will be making a further add-on video at a later date, showing how I sculpt a baby out of clay.

Honestly if I’ve learned anything from these videos is that it is illegal to make a mould from a vinyl doll kit lol Good Videos!

Well, it's not ... but you have to be VERY careful not to harm the owners commercial interests. You can copy any object (you own) for your private use and enjoyment, including music CDs, movies, ornaments, figurines, etc. But you must NOT sell or profit from the copy at all. Nor may you "pass it off" as an authentic (or original) work. This includes simply displaying them on youtube _(as youtube is commercial and places adverts / pays content creators)_ ... so, be careful not to profit directly or indirectly... nor may you allow others to profit directly or indirectly. You also cannot generally gift them or give them away, as this arguably interferes with a potential sale of a legitimate article and thus damages the commercial interest of the copyright owner. But... if you want to fill your house with replicas, you absolutely can. I'm not aware of any conditions of sale or terms of business that can legitimately apply control over what you do with the item once it passes into your ownership. There is also no contract regarding use. There MUST be some quantifiable harm to the copyright owner before they can claim against you. For example, if you allow the copy to in any way harm the reputation of the copyright owner. For this reason, it would be unwise to leave any trademarks or manufacturer marks that indicate the item is in any way affiliated with the original artist. Licensing is different, of course. For things you license on an ongoing basis, you MUST obey the license conditions ... but, for physical items purchased as a product to enjoy as you see fit, there is no protection against private copies per se. If you get a discount on the sale, some provisions might apply ... such as not being able to display or use the item commercially. However, if you have the absolute right to dispose of the item by selling it - none of those provisions would affect a subsequent owner... ... so, second hand items may be copied, regardless of any prior agreements. *But then there's ethics* Ethically speaking... if you want a second item, buy one! You might even be able to get a slight discount if you ask. Artists work hard to create items and often don't make much profit at all once their time and materials have been accounted for. Sometimes they make a loss overall due to initial investments. They should be compensated. Yes, in a copy, it is your time and your materials, sure... but the artist recoups their investment over time, and can lose money on a product if they cannot sell enough copies. So, the bottom line is... if you love an item enough to want another one... *compensate the artist.* It's the right thing to do. I once copied a beautiful item that I could not,at the time, afford to buy two of _(over £200 per item)_ ... I contacted the artist and, after a brief chat, I cheekily asked how much profit they made from each sale. It was only about £24 due to materials, transport, retail distribution, etc ... ... so, I sent them a cheque for £25, in respect of my copy. It still worked out to be less than half the retail price, even after fully compensating the artist directly : )

Carolyn Doughty I've really enjoyed watching the process of making Tarra, I've just got a few observations, if you warm the wax you should be able to paint it again and if you use a shorter screwdriver or a chisel the removal process should be easier also I think maybe a rubber mat would secure the sculpture a little bit too that would reduce the risk of puncturing the rubber due to slipping, im not by any means an expert but it's just something I noticed and thought about. Tarra is gorgeous and you are so talented x

I found this absolutely fascinating to watch and am amazed by the sheer time and effort you put into making these dolls. They are nothing short of stunning!! I imagine that you almost feel quite sad to sell them....you must become attached to each creation due to the extreme dedication to each one. It must also be difficult to sell a doll, never quite knowing how it will be treated? I just think you're so incredibly talented and creative with your craft that I'm a bit awe struck!! I truly hope that every single recipient of one of your dolls fully appreciates the work and love which has gone into each individual creation and looks after them in a manner to reflect that.

@CarolynDoughtyDolls
@CarolynDoughtyDolls 5 жыл бұрын
You woukdnt need a mother mould for a 3” and the all the stages would be quicker because of the size but you would still pretty much go through most of the stages yes. Depending on the pose of the baby you might be better Doing a 2 part mould for a tiny baby.

I'm not a silicon doll maker, I just like watching things get made and learning techniques. I am interested in armature sculpting however, any who I think I missed it, but what is the purpose of the outer clay application and drying? is it to better secure and firm the silicon around the original clay sculpture?
@CarolynDoughtyDolls
@CarolynDoughtyDolls 7 жыл бұрын
aswee01 The glove mould is quite flexible and would not support itself when pouring it Would be like pouring liquid into a rubber glove - by making a shell, or mother mould, it ensures the silicone mould holds its shape while pouring.
@genieofthelamp7824
@genieofthelamp7824 7 жыл бұрын
Thankyou for your reply, I was wondering too. I saw someone who makes weird support type things that she put what you call you glove mounds in for pouring. It was like a deep wooden box with a "rubber glove" nailed to a square frame around the top of the box then she pours into it.

Hi Carolyn, this is Pat Neill from way back when as I couldn't find the place to type to you. I'm trying every thing you are showing, but they are not close to yours. I'm still trying. Mine are coming out larger than yours. So I am taking off clay, and starting over. Your dolls are so wonderful and look so real. Thanks so much for sharing. I have tried 3 kinds of clay, so my question is-would you tell me what kind of clay do you use? I think that if my clay looks like yours, then I will do better. I can hope so I will trying. Thanks again and you are so special. Pat

@CarolynDoughtyDolls
@CarolynDoughtyDolls Жыл бұрын
cheaper to buy one really, I would say to make a doll from start to finish it will cost around £1000-2,000 but that is if you get it right first time, doesn't allow for errors or things going wrong. So unless you are really serious better to buy one. Maybe buying a blank doll and painting it yourself would be an option?
