Silicone baby doll - inserting a full body armature

This video is of a silicone baby doll. NO REAL CHILDREN are featured in this video, only a silicone doll.
Many people have asked me to do a video showing how to insert a full body armature into a silicone baby doll. So this video shows how I make the armature, insert it into the doll, seal the doll back up again and fix it invisibly so nothing is visible on the doll at the end. Also shows how the armature changes how the doll moves and can be posed.

I'm wondering if the flesh would tear if you stitched the baby side to side from the inside, out like the way a surgeon might do, and then still use the glue to hold it all in place? Just an idea...❤

@@dawnwatkins6554 That would seem to be simpler but in practical terms almost impossible. Yes you certainly do need to be confident in working with the silicone, but as I sculpt and pour my own dolls there is less risk than for someone who has paid a lot of money for a blank baby, certainly.

@@CarolynDoughtyDolls I looked up doll skeletons and found that there are plastic jointed "bones" that look like they could be suspended within a mold before pouring it. I'm not a reborner, but it looks like it would be easier to do then what I watched you doing for over an hour yesterday. 😔

This was fascinating to watch. Started looking like a flesh bag. Then the armature gave him better dimension/ realism. Beginning you're right it's not for the faint of heart. What's funny is you kept calling him a blank so I was thinking the baby was supposed a eunuch. Which obviously it wasn't lol. I know you said he's being sent to his mom/artist... So obviously painting will be done, and that's what you meant by him being a blank. And I understood. Just my mind frame playing on words. Beautifully well done❤ ! Especially cleaning up the seam.

Sorry yes sometimes I forget some viewers don't know what I mean. I sculpt and mould and cast the babies myself, some I go on to paint and root and sell as finished babies, some I sell as 'blank kits' which are the flesh coloured blank babies which another artist will paint and root etc.

Imagine putting a wire armature inside a rubber glove that is filled with liquid silicone and trying to stop it touching the edge of the glove, to stay in the middle and not sink or move - very difficult to do. I would suggest almost impossible. But thanks for the suggestion xx

Thank you for sharing this, ive only got one sil baby and ive made mistakes that ive learned from and hopefully wont make again . Doughty is the name I acquired from my second husband, he was from the north east of England where it’s more common around there. I’ve since remarried but for the doll business I kept that name beciase people know me by that name but my married name is now Gibson. You may find if you have the same name in your family that it may also have originated in the North East of England, around Newcastle/Durham way, I think it may also have some popularity in Ireland.

What kind of liquid do you use with the fan brush to smooth out the silicone?

It’s just whatever solvent you use to thin your silicone for painting, I use Bob Ross Thinners bit you can use Novocs or Naptha or any other solvent like SAM OSS

after fixing and washing I just start painting usually. Occasionally I paint a very thin layer of diluted transparent silicone, depends on the kit

all sorts of reasons for this, could be the silicone that the baby is cast in (some cheap kits coming from china are cast in a cheaper quality tin silicone which is not compatible with platinum silicone paints) or could be the materials you are using (the type of paint, or the sponges etc, if they contain something that the platinum silicone is not compatible with like latex, it will affect the cure or how it sticks) or could be that the kit hasnt been cleaned thoroughly and there is still some release agent on it from the mould which would stop the paint sticking. A good quality kit from a respected artist will be thoroughly fixed and cleaned and ready to paint. Lots of reasons. But if it is a cheap kit and a harder silicone it it probably the siilcone the doll is poured in.

That is something I've never tried, mainly because I don't like the idea of tubes inside the doll with water through, I just don't like the idea so I don't do that I'm sorry. But I imagine the process is similar to this.

Carolyn❤ Thankyou! Can you tell me what brand of fan brush you use ? I have issues with my brushes bristles separating when doing the smoothing process and it makes it so hard to smooth it out.

I just get cheap ones from Amazon, just do search on artists fan brushes and choose the nylon type ones. You can only really use them once as they clog up with silicone and it cures on the brush, but they are only about £1 each so its not a lot to waste.
