BUT WHAT IS A SINE PLATE? I'm getting this question a lot, and while I do go into detail in the second build video, I'll explain here briefly. It's it's a tool for setting parts at very very precise angles. Precision gauge blocks are placed under the floating pin which tilts the plate. The trigonometric SINE function is used to figure out how tall the gauge blocks need to be to hit the target angle.

I think the problem was youtube is sending your vid to randos not necessarily into hardcore machining (like me), but are into general maker, math, and science youtube, these people just saw the title and wanted to know what the fuck a sine block is and how u use it (like me). I sub to people like 3 Blue 1 Brown and such but also people like Colin Furze. Just a quick free sample size 1 SEO survey for you, maybe something changed recently? also loved the explanation comment, was quick precise (much like the block) and to the point. Answered my question perfectly!

It’s one thing for a business to give money to get their name out there but you just know that someone at that company found these videos and showed them to someone else and the next thing you know someone with the power to send some tools spent a week binge watching and now they just want to see the stuff they sell used on their new favorite show.

I noticed in one shot it looks like your carbide end mill is creating sparks. I was told by a machinist that allowing your cutting chips to get that hot will chip and damage the carbide after I had done some finishing with a fly cutter. Have you noticed anything similar? I'm curious is that's actually a problem for carbide or if I perhaps misunderstood him.
@InheritanceMachining
@InheritanceMachining 2 жыл бұрын
You saw right. I've notice this will happen more and more if the carbide is dull and my guess is that the carbide gets dull from improper speeds and feeds. I rotated the inserts in the middle of one of the setups and the sparks went away for the same cutting rates. Seem to be that once you see the sparks, it's too late.
@fratink
@fratink 2 жыл бұрын
@@InheritanceMachining Oh, very interesting! That's good to know. When I had done that I definitely didn't calculate the speeds and feeds, but it was also student tooling at my university so it was already probably in rough shape. I"ll have to be more careful next time just to make sure.

Did lots of manual grinding as a Gaugemaker, surface/cylindrical, jig. Would highly recommend blocking tall parts on surface grinder with perfectly square 1"x2"x3" blocks? or even the bigger ones 2"x4"x6", or precision angle plates? Herman Schmidt the best there is! For the tall ends it may have been possible to clamp to a precision angle plate, tram in and grind?

10:24 Wait a second. Are the vertical stands of the walls milled and chamfered? That's some high standard. From what I see in construction nowadays, they don't usually chamfer the planks even when building houses. Let alone garages or workshops. To say more, they often build from hairy scary wet wood right off the saw and let it dry, and warp somewhen after. 'Natural moisture' as it's called. Damn. I should double check everything if I ever gonna build myself a hut.
@HuFlungDung2
@HuFlungDung2 Жыл бұрын
That tight hinge design is ripe for seizing up. Fully hardened steel parts don't have this problem too much, but your average guy is better to use dissimilar metals. For example, steel and aluminum bronze (which is quite a tough material, not like using brass or some soft shit). I cringed when after you went to all that work to make the block nice and square and parallel, you then screwed it all by grinding the bottom with the pins as a reference. That's not perfectionism. You should have remachined the v ways, or better, scrape in what you had. It would have been a minuscule error to correct by scraping or lapping. In real life machining, surface appearance of a soft material is kind of irrelevant if the function is met. Soft materials get scratched SO EASILY in a machine shop environment. Then you're afraid to use the damn thing you built for fear of scratching it. Tools are there to be used, not to be admired as keepsakes.

Very nice.. Managed to figure it out only because I was a combat engineer surveyor during my service and we were trained to use range finders and an abney level (a combination of a spirit level, translucent mirrors, protractor, and viewing tube) to determine elevation of distant terrain (e.g. top of hills/ mountains). Basically the same function but you have the known angle (abney level) and length of hypotenuse (range finder to top of the target) and resolve for the height (opposite side). The same concept is used for measuring ground sinking/ shifting problems etc. If you see construction workers on two ends with one looking through what appears to be a telescope on a tripod, and the other holding a ruler vertically, they're measuring the difference in height, angle, and distance between points to determine if the ground has shifted or sunk. We were trained to do this manually (lots of trigonometry) but these days all of these equipment are automated - e.g. We had to manually measure the distance to ground from the scope, and use spirit levels to plumb but the modern equipment does all of that automatically and spits out the calculations on its own.

I've heard when doing the bottom of the chuck face to not use the magnet. Because if the top of the chuck is saddled from use it will deform the bottom. Better to use the clamps keep it from moving. Then when doing the top of the chuck activate the magnet to create the condition for which the chuck will be used. Might be helpful. :)

Your videos have been a huge welcome to my ever growing stressful life, you are so calming compared to a lot of makers out there, thank you. Also what camera are you using? Been trying to decide how best to start filming in my wooden wall shop and your quality is spectacular

Thanks, man! I appreciate the kind words. The camera is a Canon 90D. It's not cheap. But leaves a lot of room to grow into.

Love the channel. Maybe a little lest on the perfectionist clames all the time but I appreciate the attention to detail. Im a fan.

So cool how one tool fixes another until you are working with consistent higher accuracy throughout.
