Making a Small Hole in a THICK Stone Wall - #25

Progress is the name of the game in this episode of our Portugal renovation project saga.
In order to continue the conversion of our ground floor (which was previously used as a wine cellar (aka. adega) and an animal shelter) we need to install some pipes to bring hot and cold water into the kitchen and a grey water pipe to take away all the waste. This grey water will later be filtered and used for irrigating our veg garden - more on that in a future episode.
In order to install the pipes, we need to break through some thick stone walls. Stay tuned to see how we get on...

I'm renovating an old Japanese farmhouse that never had its own bathroom or sewage system. There's an old septic tank sitting directly beneath two old pit toilets out in the storage building that I can tie into, but it sits firmly within massive stone walls. Never saw anyone glueing the ht-pipes together. Interesting technique.... I hope it will stay sealed when the pipe starts expanding and shrinking when hot waste water runs through it. That's in my understanding the reason why the connections are made with a rubber seal; to allow expansion of the PVC lengthwise.

I have installed a plastic piped swimming pool filter around a above ground tank. I plasted the glue on the plastic pipe connections and it melted the plastic then pushed the joint together. In all I did at least 50 joints and never had a leak. The mechanics of the joint pushing melted plastic pipe in to the joint ensured there was no leak.

Hi, you can get a pressure testing kit I think would work with your pipe. Plug one end, seal the other end with a valve pressure gauge contraption. Pump air in with a bicycle pump arrangement, close the valve and leave it 24 hours and monitor for pressure decrease. Oh and also, another great video with double entendres flying thick and fast 😂.

Put in plenty of rodding points in your waste water pipes while you are at it .Portuguese plumbers tend to undersize waste water pipes .use bigger PVC for the long runs and step down for sink connections etc .presumably you will be running a two pipe system separating WCS from grey water for harvesting .

Yep, two different sets of pipes with a diverter and no-return valves with access points. This particular 40mm waste pipe will also run into a larger 50mm one when more services connect in (40mm seemed more than sufficient for a sink and dishwasher)

I love plastic water pipe. It's the best thing ever invented. So easy to work with. It's 15 years or more since I did the plumbing in my current house, so don't think I've come across the type with an aluminium layer. That would have made it even easier I think, since it's difficult to bend the usual stuff to a specific shape.

The aluminium layer in the white pipe you used prohibits oxygen diffusion into the pipe which would cause corrosion. Therefore, you can use it for heating systems to distribute the hot water.

Not all stages of plumbing is fast moving. Laying and connecting pipe is one of them. Checking for leaks and sealing gets better, but knowing it’s done right and it works, is the best feeling!

Yup been there when rewiring, our walls were two sides with 50cm between, rock walls with smaller infill. Every time my hubs pulled out a large stone a shower of infill fell down. Nightmare but larger plastic pipe pushed in created a tunnel for conduit. Glad to see you didn’t have that problem. Also the threading through of the pipe was also an issue, in France you can now get pre loaded conduit, not available to us though. Excellent progress chaps. 😍😎🇫🇷

We laid the subfloor yesterday 😀 We’ve been monitoring the temp in these rooms for a while, it’s usually 5-10 degrees less than the outside temp.

You should look into having foam isolation for your water lines. On winter ensures still water doesn't get to cold, the reverse from summer. It also helps getting hot water from your boiler/thermoaccumulator faster to the end of the line (shower, sink, etc). Its also more efficient since the heat isn't lost while the water is traveling to the end of line.

In the subfloor it’s not needed in our case since the entire subfloor is insulation (in the form of leca). We’ll have to search for something more natural than foam for above the floor

Here in New Hampshire, USA we expect almost 100 degrees(37.77 Celsius) tomorrow(Sunday 7-24-2022) Air Conditioner for this older lady, although early this morning was able to pick some green beans, cucumber, squash and tomatoes from community garden plot.

I may be a little old-fashioned and shouldn't interfere, but I do a little anyway. the drain pipe must have a drop of at least 2%, i.e. that for every meter the drain pipe must have a drop of 2 cm. It is not enough to determine the slope of the sewer. It must be maintained during laying. The most practical option is a special level with a protractor. If there is no professional equipment, you have to be crafty. you could take a spirit level with a protractor on it or take a meter spirit level and put a block of 2 cm at one end. It will be such a pain that you have to break up the floor again because the sewer stops because you haven't got enough of a slope.. especially important if you have to have a dishwasher connected.. Keep up the fantastic work... 💪💪💪

That drainage leak test wasn't sufficient; however helpful it was - especially the paper towel. The proper way, at least here in the USA, to test drainage is with what's called a top out test. Simply stop or cap off the lowest point and fill the highest point with water, and let it set ~15 mins. The paper towel trick for catching leaks has been around for generations. I imagine me since paper towels were invented. This way you know for certain that the seal is good even in the worst conditions.

I was never a fan of running a box or oversize pipe to run the actual pipe in but after busting concrete up to repair sewer pipe and water pipe I can see the advantage of having a conduit or box that one can run wires or pipes through without removing the floor again.

Just a thought..you might want to pressure test the tubes as well. Just have the water flow from one end the other might give you the illusion that the connections are water right... Once the tubes are connected to your system (pressurized).. you might end up with another undesired result...Cheers Ben

Nice Work! I would recommend that you use pipes 75mm and upwards for the wastewater in the floors. Easier to clean and takes way much longer for buildup of fats and grease in the pipes. Greetings from Norway.

It's very interesting &cool see you guys doing all that work by yourself On the drain and waterlines or on anything going through any walls specifically like those you are working on it's always advisable to use a sleeve ( bigger pipe diameter ) preferably steel pipe to prevent the weight of the wall to crash the utility lines in case the wall shifts That's the building code recommendation , but on your case , the wall as been there for a long time , it should be fine

When using coiled pipes pick up the whole roll and un roll it! if you pull coils of the side twists will happen and become a nightmare!..

Nice video. You can built yuorself a littel helper for those rolls. Just put a stick trough the middle an hang the stick on two sawhorses. It rolls of smothly and die not Twist. That works also great for elektric cables. Excuse my Englisch, best wishes from germany!

Those pipes try an expanding bolt with a large diameter washer. Then wrap string around the pipe the washer will stop the string slipping off. Electrician’s snake and wire around the pipe is also an idea.

Please be aware that bringing your hot and cold lines so close together , you will get a lot of thermal transfer, the heat will be robbed by the cold line and result in warm lines on either side. You should consider giving them separation, and insulate the hot line. Good luck !

With walls that thick you will want to run data/Ethernet (and TV?) cables into the downstairs rooms and maybe upstairs as well. These should not be run parallel to/with electrical cables. You can then put cheap wifi repeaters in there - or whatever…

Does you no good now. But in Lidl now and again the sell 800mm length carbide tipped drills in varicose diameters up to 38mm dia. If you have friends in the UK you could ask them to keep an eye out for them and bring them with them when they visit. They are very cheap I purchased a set just in case I ever need them. They are to heavy to post.

olá bom dia, in portuguese so you can practice or copy/paste to translator, se utilizarem uma guia de instalações electricas de fibra ou um arame rigido pelo tubo envolvente( blue /red) e o acoplarem ao pex podem puxar e empurrar ao mesmo tempo e fazer essa dificil introdução mais rapidamente... atencao aos diametros, guias de pequenos diametros dentro de tubos de largo diametro interior nao funcionam.bem fazem efeito de mola e nao seguem em frente, utilizem alternativamente tubos de pvc electricos direitos com fita isoladora na ponta para evitar colisoes e bloqueios no corrugado interior do tubo de revestimento. vão lá para fora e desenrolem o tubo pex para ficar o mais direito possível e façam o enfiamento lá fora ao invés de fazerem tudo dentro de casa num espaco confinado, mesmo com muito calor lá fora acaba por compensar, take care and keep up the great work!

Good job on the pex install. That is not how to test a waste pipe though. To test it you need to fill the pipe and let it stand for a while. A trickle of water through the pipe will not find a leak in the top of the joint. 90 bend and a length of pipe on each end. fill it with water and go have a glass of wine... The pipe you used looks like a push fit and is tested to be used in cast flooring. I dont think gluing the joint was a good idea.

Just a thought. If you only trickled the water through when testing for water tightness, you may want to test again with the pipe full / incline both ends, fill and wait. When you have it hooked up to mains/your own water, the pipe will be full. Ie you could have a leak on the top of the pipe that you would have missed in your test.

If mains water it is usually quite high presure in Portugal, which may impact on your "gravity only" atmospheric pressure test result..........just saying
