He needed to make some small gears so he made a gear cutter, shown in the link above to cut the gears. To make the cutter for the gears he had to make a tool, shown in this video in order to get the profile off the gear cutter correct. In order for this tool to cut properly, he had to align it with the center of the lathe chuck. That is why at the end of the video he has the small rod close to the nib in that brass part held in the chuck.

The fact that you sanded so close to that hole without breaking through the sides pretty much says it all. Nice work.

As always a good surprise in your work, I'm a hobbyist and could (I believe many would like) show us the cutting tool formats that you make according to your needs, how you shape and sharpen?

I've done this with similar sized drill rod, but I silver soldered it into the tool holder. I love making D-bits for odd sized holes. Also easy to make custom reamers, as you've posted in previous videos.

This was a very nice break from shoveling snow from my driveway. This is the longest I've been kept out of the shop by cold weather for many years. This was a nice break, thanks!

Peter, well it can warm up 48 Fahrenheit degrees from the coldest point we had, and still be below freezing. Unless the wind is brutal I can be in the shop when the temp is upper 20's F or higher and do ok. I shoveled a path to the shop door yesterday, today I get inside!

I didn’t notice when this was first posted but you seem to use several different belts on the vertical sander. What grades did you use? The coarsest one seems *very* coarse - which is how my attention was drawn to the apparent changes.
