That looks sick. I've got a few slices of this meteorite at home. One question though... Don't you need to coat it with SOMETHING at least, to stabilize it and protect it from rusting? One of my slices wasn't coated and my fingerprint on it started rusting it (so I had to buff it away and put some beeswax over it. Dunno if wax is what you're supposed to use but it seemed to have worked at least...)

It's a cool idea and well executed but... I am guessing you bought it from China? I am sorry to tell you but that's not Muonionalusta. Muoni has much finer (thinner and longer) kamacite/taenite crystals with much fewer oxide/sulfide inclusions (what gave you problems with this piece). What you got is Aletai which is (should be) significantly cheaper. Unfortunately, Chinese sellers often falsely claim to be selling Muoni when they have Aletai (it was a huge iron found in China so it's pretty safe to assume that all the iron meteorites coming from China are Aletai, unless you are certain that you can spot the difference). Though Muonionalusta is not very stable and is known to rust (Gibeon would be preferable) it's nowhere near as bad as Aletai, if not stabilized. Provided the whole point was not just to make this video but you actually like to keep that pendant, I would keep an eye on the rust or do an electrolysis and some kind of a protective coating afterwards. It helps to keep it in low humidity environment (sealed container with a few bags of desiccant). Other than these longevity problems, the material itself is just as cool.
@RockhoundingLife
@RockhoundingLife Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input. Not saying you are wrong but i bought it from a reputable source years ago in the USA. I try not to buy anything outside of NA for that reason.
@dsvilko
@dsvilko Жыл бұрын
@@RockhoundingLife I might be wrong but I do have slices of both and this very much looks like Aletai. In any case, the fact that you had it for a while is a very good sign that it's either from a more stable inner part of the original fragment of has been stabilized. I would still keep an eye on it.
@RockhoundingLife
@RockhoundingLife Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I'm not a meteorite expert and im not too overly concerned about it as im not a collector either. Just had the opportunity to buy a couple of pieces once. The main point of the video was to make a pendent from space rock. From my understanding of the little research i have done is that all iron meteorites are approximately the same age (4.5 billion years) i suspect that has to due with them all having common origins as being some of the first matter that formed in the solar system. Thats really the driver for me. Im not really hung up on where on earth it was found since im not looking to sell it.
