Pottery making is an intricate craft that requires patience and precision. From shaping the clay to firing the final product, every step is a testament to the artisan's skill and dedication. I took a ceramics class in High School, I didn't do very well and I ditched a lot of days when I had it, there was nothing that I made that I truly liked until I made my teapot for my final during the second semester. While it was a bit of a rush and the body was not as smooth as I wanted it to be I was proud that I made it, I thought everything else looked pretty nice and I glazed it a pretty sky blue color and did the lid top in green. Though I can't use it for tea (I made it non-utilitarian because when it was fired the lid got stuck on top, and I didn't want to risk messing it up) I still have it in a glass display case that we have some picture frames in in our house. This teapot was one of the most creative things I have done.

I assume for drying the clay quickly. So that it can subsequently be removed/chiseled away (for a highly polished end result) without first having to wait hours. Or maybe it gets hot enough to even get close to actually firing it, but just the top surface. And then it becomes brittle and chips away from the subsurface easier, when abrased. Either way it's probably a trade secret and I just learned about it from this video. (Or maybe it's considered a shameful, cheap way to cheat the true process of pottery? And that's why it was going to be cut... I don't know.) But it's a way of smoothing out surface ridges for sure.

SERIOUS GUILE bad idea. It adds a lot of lubrications to the clay and allows it to dry more easily later on
@ric1336
@ric1336 4 жыл бұрын
@@Seth_Cones True, but with my experience on pottery it all depends on how you prefer to throw. At my apprenticeship, my mentor always finds it funny how much wet clay (slip) I have on my hands when I throw. She throws with her hands mainly wet with just water and would wet town the clay rather than her hands more often. It also depends on what works best for how you throw. I have a bad habit of building up a lot of slip on my hands and letting it dry on the backs of it, which sometimes chips onto the piece I'm working on.
