Hey, yeah, I'd have liked them deeper, but actually quite like it for this as space marines are meant to be pretty big. I didn't make the base boards with trenches in mind, think I mentioned that. I would have done something different with the wooden boarder too, as that did get in the way. 😀

Otherwise, absolutely awesome build, these are the kinds of boards I love watching being played on, and playing on myself! Straight lines are a bit of a no-no in trench design, as the blast from an explosion will travel long the trench; also any enemy getting into the system can produce devastating fire by firing down the trench. For this reason all trenches were made in a series of zig-zags.

Great project and video! Tip: For more realistic timber texture on the coffee stirrers, I find using a sharp (not used much) hacksaw/metal-saw blade is best as you get really fine grooves on the wood and they come up really well during washing and dry brushing. Any sharp saw blade will do as you pass over the wood multiple times but the hacksaw blade is the most readily available and finest.

To make trenches more realistic you should make them zigzag to stop enemy troops from being able to shoot straight down them also you could add some bunkers similar to the ones in WWII
@BroadswordWargaming
@BroadswordWargaming 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that would look good. This isn't a very big board (it's kill team sized(, so I didn't have the room for zig zagging trenches without clogging it up too much. I will be doing this on a larger board, so lots of zigzags and some weapons bunkers and stuff would look awesome. 😁

I wasn't referring to just the polystyrene to be fair, it's more the grout and the general mess caused. I did say something about scooping it up, either that or I imagined I did. Ha. Yeah, it was a good board and I was happy with how it turned out! The studio is all smoke and mirrors man, not as impressive in real life 🤣

i think it could be nice to make the trenches a bit deeper so that only the head pops up over the edge. then you can also have latters for when a charge is declared and maybe tanks driving on top of the trenches with men in them
@BroadswordWargaming
@BroadswordWargaming 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I would probably go a bit deeper, but these frames weren't built with trenches in mind as they're only 25mm deep, without groundcover and wood etc. I'm actually pretty happy with how they came out though, fun for an overrun trench peice. 😀

Hey, thanks so much, I was pretty happy with it.😀 It's actually the same size as a killteam board, 22"x30", so I'll be playing some killteam on it. This would (and I probably will) scale up to a 6x4 pretty easily though, you'll just need a pile of wood! 🤣

Which board? The base of the board? Its 3mm plywood, cut to size, then I've glued/screwed some wooden strips around the edges and glued cheap polystyrene into the centre.
@worromot

Very cool. As far as im aware, trenches in ww1 had sharper turns than the train track template. They also had tons of 90 degree turns to stop shrapnel and blast waves. Very nice board but thats just something that bothered me. Cheers!
@BroadswordWargaming
@BroadswordWargaming 4 жыл бұрын
I mean, it's being used for killteam really and those boards aren't very big. You don't have room for 90 degree turns and bunkers without over crowding the board. If you want to do that, you could, but I don't think it'd look good at this size. It is really just a nod to that style but grim darking it up

What about some add ons for this trenches? like artillery and heavy artillery emplacements, a headquarter emplacement... bunkers, machine guns (heavy bolter) possitions... improvised walls (like sandbags)... Or what ideas you may have to use those icecream sticks, not those old fashioned which are just a large thing rounded in its start and end, but those ones that are more of an 8 shape...
@BroadswordWargaming
@BroadswordWargaming 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, yes, there is certainly a lot more stuff you could add into these boards. 😀 This one is relatively small, and I didn't want to over populate it.. but razorwire, sandbags, gun bunkers etc would all fit nicely. I will do this on a 6x4 at some point and add other things in, smashed rhinos and all sorts. This was my first attempt at anything like this, so I wanted to keep it simple and effective. I did play with lots of ideas, but honestly, if you're going to build one, just try stuff. 😀

So part of why trees like that often look so unnatural to your eye is that twigs lack taper, being uniformly thick from bottom to top.
