@alex steele, some advice from a professional jeweler on dealing with those pesky tiny stones: never use tweezers, use some spru wax, or any kind of sticky wax, just form it into a point and you’ll never fling a gem off into the wild blue yonder only to be found ten years later when you finally move that thing. Advice for keeping your hands still: ELBOWS ON THE TABLE! Sit down and rest your elbow and wrist on the table. One more thing, the garnet you’re using is cut with a modern round brilliant cut, I’d order a cabochon cut for extra realism, and because they’re cooler that way anyways.

It is relatively easy math based on the historical numbers. So we have another 2 weeks which probably counts for 8 episodes to make the lower guard. Another 2-3 episodes for the handle if it is a simple enough and not some engraving. Then at least 2 episodes for final assembly. So overall we are talking about 12-13 episodes more which is somewhere on September. This means that your suggestion of 30 episodes is quite accurate.

If you coat some dowel in beeswax it sticks to the gems and makes them a lot less painful to move than with tweezers. Also I recconend hand drilling your stone seats in the tube with a hand pin vice and some drill bits, you get much better control that way and keep it central. Using the fordem is faster but there's a much higher chance your seat won't be central and too deep. If you want to press fit the tube, drill a hole the same diameter as the tube (file the tube edge lightly to rough the edges to give it some grip) and tap it in with a piece of wood covering the tube as you lightly tap it in. This will provide a tight fit without ruining any surface finishing on the tube and won't crack the stone. That's all the advice I can think of, good luck!

I picked up a book about scything, and it has a chapter on forging scythes. It would be awesome if you would forge one, the compound curves in the blade likely would be very challenging. I'd love to see your take on it.

The average young adult is caring for the environment better than any other generation ever did, supporting their friends through mental illness, working a job with terrible hours having to smile at customers who are practically verbally abusive, and facing the reality that no matter how many hours a week they work and how much they save, they will never be at a point where they can buy their own house, because the previous generations have left them with a broken economy. the way Alec is going I would not be too suprised if it is another month before this is finished, and that is fine by me. he is going for close to historical accuracy (albeit made with some modern equipment) and at the time a top quality sword with an elaborate finish would have taken craftmen months to complete, and it would not all have been one persion, a blacksmith with his apprentices would have spent days or weeks (maybe even months) working on the blade then handed that off to someone else to finish and polish, then that would be handed off to other people to make the grip, guard and pommel, then handed off to other people to engrave the above, then others for final assembly and other people to make the scabard. a sword like that would have likely cost equivelent to the price of big house and had a dozen or more people involved in its production

Each episode that you spend engraving it reminds me of when I used to make jewelry in school and fills me with the urge to get back into it

I love the idea of progressing backwards through time, to discover methods and techniques used by metal workers of the past.. for your next KZbin project you could consider creating a sword from the bronze age, because the history you talk about is almost as fun as watching you work.

Man, Alec, 18 videos. You're really putting a lot of work into this project, probably more than any other before it. Keep up the good work!

This project has been going on for so long I've lost all recollection of what the rest of the sword looks like. Love it.

Knowledge is power, If one don't know, does not mean that that person is stupid, just uneducated. When you have the means and will to learn, nothing can stop one. Great work Alec. Wish i could help you out in the shop!

That went well oops! Okay, just a tiny slip there, fixed. Now the Eye! Alec, you have come a very long way. From tongs to hammers to knives to swords. Now doing gold inlay & gem setting. Outstanding. Thanks for the lift as you go.
