This is an art very few know how to do these days, you did an incredible job. I myself am in animation school and hope to one day make a whole movie using only traditional methods. I hope I can pull it off. We need this aesthetic Brough back.

I agree, I love the old stuff, especially from the 60's and 70's. It wasn't just the hand drawn aspect, the art direction was great overall, go back and look at some of the old backgrounds, they were really fantastic. I hope, one day, you make that movie.

I'm for sure gonna make an Akira at some point, it's been on my mind for years. But I want to do something over-the-top with that one, maybe actual lights in the background or something. Like a cross between a cel and a diorama.

Great video. Lots of important information. Can I ask why you use glass and enamel paints, rather than celluloid or Dura-Lar and acrylics? Thanks
@RichardThompsonCA
@RichardThompsonCA 2 жыл бұрын
Sure thing. A friend of mine has an authentic cel from the disney store and I never really liked the way the celluloid "hangs". You have to remember, cels were never meant to be sold. There was a time they were burnt or cleaned and re-used. It was meant to be photographed on the background while laying flat. As a result when you frame and hang cels you get a wonky reflection in the celluloid. Maybe I'm just OCD, but that really bugs me. I'm not trying to fool people into thinking these are the real thing, so I don't feel the need to make them authentic. As for the choice of ink, I needed something to draw the linework with and my first choice was a technical pen (I used to use them in highschool drafting class) so I was familiar with them. Acetate ink is the only thing that won't pool/bead up on the glass. Unfortunately water based paint, like acrylic smudges the linework, so it had to be enamel. I also found that acrylic can leave an uneven finish, it can appear to have swirls in it after it's dry. I am working on a new technique now where I screen print the linework onto the glass with a solvent ink. I'm think I'm going to try Flashe vinyl paint for the colors ( I haven't been able to find any authentic vinyl cel paints). Hope this helps😀

from wher you buy the frames and the glass you use .. ?🙏

The frames were from Michael's arts and crafts store. The glass is from a local glass shop. Just standard picture frame glass.

Why did you use glass instead of a transparent sheet?
@RichardThompsonCA
@RichardThompsonCA 2 жыл бұрын
I don't like the way acetate buckles and has a wonky, warped reflection. I've seen it in actual store-bought disney cels. Since I have no intention of passing these off as authentic, I prefer to use glass.

@RichardThompsonCA
@RichardThompsonCA 3 жыл бұрын
@@hectormanuel8360 That's true, but the problem with these as a physical item is they are heavy and delicate (because of the glass involved) which makes them a nightmare to ship. I'm currently working on creating items for my store (richardthompson.ca) but I don't think these will work out as a viable product.

@@rodi2641 I'm definitely going to do a pink panther, I've been gathering reference for it. I'd like to do tutorials for the painting part, but there's already so many great painters on KZbin doing tuts. It would make the video really long, and I live out in the country, it would take days to upload, if it finished at all.
